Chapter 24
From a distance they glimpsed that the tunnel presented further ahead a kind of discontinuity, although at first they did not succeed in determining what it was. As they approached they began to discern a very large empty space to the left of the corridor and upon reaching the entrance a vast panorama unfolded in front of their eyes. A room of considerable dimensions opened at the side of the tunnel, and they could only get an idea of its proportions by a light located at the end of the room. The floor and walls had been smoothed much more finely than the rest of the pathway and it was evident that the site had at some point been devoted to uses other than the mere transit of people. The three travelers turned on their flashlights to explore the corners of the vast compound and determine if there was any content there, but at first glance the place was deserted.
