Once again, We waited for the Darkness of the night to come. It was amazing how silent and uninhabited the markets were. We slipped through the same path from which the servants entered and exited only this time, I was without my trusted companion Estelle.
She had abandoned me.
I had left for Lethoris and this time my companions were Marilyn and one of my mother's lady-in-waiting, Gemma. She was used to my mother's visits and had decided that she would accompany me in mine.
We had crossed the border successfully and this time, in a better wagon.
"Ah!" Merilyn gasped beside me and moved closer when the cow next to her mooed.
well, perhaps not for her because I had the better seat that was not surrounded or neighboured by any animals.
"Good evening," A woman in front of me wished and we wished back, in fact, all three of us wished her together. "Why are the three of you going back to the Lethoris? Do your parents know?" Her brows furrowed the possibility of being abducted by the creatures.
Gemma intervened on our behalf, "These young girls are under my guidance. But if you don't mind me asking why are you going back?"
The woman smiled as tears came to her eyes. "I am going back because the work I had here is done. I had my daughter married to a good merchant in Melenmore. Now I will go back and live my life just as it was."
I frowned at that. She had married her daughter already? "How long have people when entering Melenmore?"
The lady looked at me and answered. "A few months. Without the abundance of resources, their Kingdom has positioned to the soldiers at the points where the attack is more likely to happen so we enter from the forest."
We left the forest unguarded?! That could be the biggest mistake we could have ever possibly made. From the forest, the huge army could easily enter our Kingdom unguarded and we won't be aware of the attack till the very end.
Merilyn passed me a wary glance. She knew what that meant.
"Anywho, if you girls want I can find you some good husbands in any Kingdom you want." She said confidently.
"Even in the northern lands?" The girl at the very end asked. Our eyes immediately made and I realized that I had not noticed her enter the wagon or even sitting amongst us. She had been as quiet as a mouse.
"Northern lands?!" The apparent matchmaker recoiled back in fear, "You must not take the name of that place!"
"Why not?" I joined in. "It's not like they can hear us. We cannot even see the snowy mountains from this Kingdom."
She shook her head adamantly. "Rumor has it that Wolves live there and they have very nice hearing, I've heard."
That I giggle, "I don't think that someone can have that good hearing to hear a conversation in other kingdoms." Everyone laughed at that, even the woman did.
"You are a funny pri—girl." The girl at the end commented. "I am Lara."
"Genevieve," I answered with a polite nod. "Who are you meeting in Lethoris?"
Her green, cat-like eyes shined. "Someone who is soon to be family. I will be making sure that is safe."
Merilyn spoke up, "From the abductions? How very kind of you." She smiled at the girl; Lara who shook her head.
"Abductions will be far from her concerns, much greater thorns are in her way." She said with a calm smile on her face.
I shudder went up to my spine. Whoever she was, luck was not in her favor.
