Lost Cause.

Chapter 43: Lost cause.

"Hey. Wake up." Roah called out as the door to the carriage opened up, causing sunlight to shine down upon Kalon's back, warming him enough to wake him from his slumber.

"Huh?" Kalon rubbed his eyes and rolled onto his back to look at Raoh, who was standing outside the carriage. He raised his eyebrows slightly before locking eyes with her.

"Come on. You can't sleep all morning. I made breakfast, so come out and get some." Roah smiled tenderly at him while waving her arm to signal him to follow. It took a few moments for Kalon to wake up completely, but once he did, he was quick to put on his shirt and follow her outside.

He took a few steps towards the door and realised that he was too short to climb down using the stairs, so he sat down at the edge of the doorway and attempted to shuffle his way down slowly. But as he sat down, Roah held out her arms and wrapped them around them.

"You know, You should really think about growing taller. You can't stay this short forever." Roah joked as she gently lowered him to the ground. But as Kalon was pulled towards her, his cheeks began to turn red as he thought about what he had done the night before.

"And down we go," Roah said with a smile as Kalon's feet touched the ground. All the while, he was trying not to look her in the eyes. He felt guilty about what he had done, but he didn't want to own up to it out of fear that she wouldn't like him anymore.

"How am I supposed to grow? Is there some miracle fruit that I can eat or something?" Kalon asked while thinking about how convenient it would be for him to grow up a little. At the moment, the complications he was facing in swordsmanship was due to his sword being made for an adult to wield. His arms were simply too small to wield it and made him manoeuvre it slower than he would if the sword was the right size for him.

He looked back to Roah after hearing her laugh.

"Miracle fruit? Don't even think about miracle fruit. If you got your hands on one of them, a big force from a mountain sect would send an army to take it from you. Just wait a few years. I'm sure time will pass within the blink of an eye while you're at school. I know it did for me." Roah said while recalling her time at school.

"Did you go to the same school that you are sending me to?" Kalon asked. But as soon as he did, he was silenced.

"Come and eat first. We can talk about those kinds of things when we get back on the road." Roah whispered while looking at the driver of the carriage. When she had woken up in the morning, she had offered to cook him some food, but he refused her offer and opted to take a few dry grains of rice and swallow them whole.

She found it strange, but as time went on, she felt his eyes on her as she was looking away. It seemed like he was getting impatient waiting for her to make breakfast, so he got down from the carriage to feed the horses. She didn't know much about the man other than he worked for the military, but she didn't like how he looked at her, so she decided to wake Kalon to kill the awkwardness.

She rushed Kalon to sit down and eat and then got back into the carriage. She took the time to tell him about all of the memories that she had at school. To Kalon, it seemed that she had quite the life. She shared many memories with exciting people. He wanted to hear more about her life, but she wasn't in a hurry to talk about her.

She wanted to teach Kalon how to cultivate. He was already twelve years old and didn't have the basic knowledge of cultivation. In the capital, it was something that they taught to children from the age of five. So if Kalon were to enrol into a school, he would be considerably behind the other students.

She knew that he could pick up the knowledge of cultivation while at school and from other students. But learning a technique would be something difficult even in school. Not many people liked to share their techniques, and some were guarded as family secrets.

Getting a technique was the limiting factor as to why all humans didn't cultivate since they were expensive and not many people could afford them. Roah was at a loss for what to do.

'I know three techniques. But I can't tell him about the one my master instructed me to use. And the one that I bought before this was a little slow. And then there is that one. I never used it before, but it should be pretty good if it's a king tier technique.' Roah thought to herself as she pondered on what she should teach him.

"One or Two? Pick a number." Roah spoke with a smile as she looked over at Kalon, who wasn't paying attention to what was going on.

"A number? I pick two." Kalon said, confused as to why she was asking him to pick. It seemed a little strange to him, but he decided to wait and see where it went before asking her anything else.

"Well, it seems like it's fate then. I picked up this cultivation technique before meeting my master for the first time, so I didn't have time to test it. If you picked one, then you would be stuck with a generic technique, but this will be one all to yourself." Roah said with a smile as she reached down to her hip, where a small black pouch hung from her belt and put her hand inside.

As she pulled her hand back out, a faint glow of white light emerged as she took out a tanned leather-bound book that was way too big to fit inside a bag that small.

"You just- How did you do that?" Kalon asked as he saw the size of the book compared to the bag. He hadn't seen anything like that before in his life, and to him, it looked like the book had just materialised from the white light.

"You haven't seen a universe bag before? Well, I guess they are a little bit expensive so they won't have them in rover town. Well, it's just a bag that can store things that are too big to fit in normally. It's nothing new." Roah said nonchalantly as she flicked open the first page of the book.

"Here you go, High nights blood moon. It's a king tier cultivation technique, so make sure that you look after it and don't let anyone else know you have it. If anyone finds out, then they might try to steal it from you since it is worth a lot of money.

But I am trusting this to you, so make sure that you learn everything the book has to offer." Roah said while handing him the book. But as Kalon looked down at the words on the page, his mind went blank.

"Don't tell me that you can't even read?" Roah sighed as she saw the blank expression on his face as he looked at the words and began to feel like it was a lost cause to be teaching someone from a backwater town how to cultivate.
