Healing Light.

Chapter 52: Healing light.

"We're here. Hurry up. We really need to see to your face." The girl shouted out once again as her mind was still in a state of panic while dragging Kalon behind her. He could barely keep up with her even though she was wearing heels and a dress, but she moved relatively fast despite that.

"I'm seriously fine. It's no big deal. You don't have to go through this much trouble for something like that." Kalon said in protest and was still confused about where they were heading, but as he looked up at the street and looked around, he could tell that they had entered a wealthy part of the city.

The other houses seemed relatively small and cosy, but now the street had opened up, and the size of the homes increased to five times the extent of the ones near the tavern that Igris owned. Each house had a gate made out of iron bars surrounding it to keep out unwanted guests, and the one that the girl had led them to seemed to be the biggest house on the street and had a small hut by the gate.

"Miss Mary, you have returned? Oh, and you brought a boy?" An older-looking man who looked around sixty took a step out from the hut and walked towards the gate to open it.

"I have no time to talk, Regi. I need to go to the kitchen immediately." The blond-haired girl shouted out as she continued to pull Kalon behind her.

'I feel like I'm going to be sick. This is too much movement for me.' Kalon thought as the motion sickness he felt within the carriage seemed to be amplified as the girl forcefully pulled him along the street like a disobedient dog.

The girl led him up a large marble staircase and into the house. There was an even more enormous staircase at the entrance with a red carpet lying upon the steps and a large chandelier hanging from the ceiling. Still, they were the only things Kalon noticed before he was quickly rushed through a long corridor and into a room with white tiles across the floor and the walls where the sounds of a knife striking wood echoed out from the far corner.

"Oh, it's you. What are you doing back here? Dinner won't be ready for another hour." A woman wearing a white apron called out as she turned around to see both Kalon and Mary were standing hand in hand.

"Can I help you with anything?" The woman asked as Mary took the time to catch her breath.

"I need some ice, quickly. I can't let father know that I hurt someone again." Mary shouted out as the woman in the Apron looked at them both for a moment before noticing that Kalon was clutching his eye with his left hand.

"Oh, no. What did you do this time?" The woman asked before picking up a clean towel and scooping a handful of ice out of a bucket that was kept near the sink and piled the ice in the centre, and wrapped it tightly as she approached Kalon with a caring expression.

"Come here, my dear, let me see how bad it is." The woman in the white Apron spoke in a soft voice before kneeling down slightly so she could be on eye level with him.

"O-okay." Kalon reluctantly replied as he thought about trying to run away since he felt uncomfortable being inside a strangers house, but they didn't seem to hold any malicious intent towards him, and he thought that it would be for the best if he didn't return to Roah with a bruised face.

Kalon stepped forward and removed his hand so the woman could take a better look. As he did so, his eye remained closed as it was still sensitive to the light, and more tears began to fall from it.

"Oh, that's going to be one hell of a bruise if you don't get that looked at." The woman said with a sigh before putting her hand over Kalon's eye.

"[Healing light.]" The woman whispered quietly as a slight glow of green light emerged from her hand and made its way into Kalon's half-opened eye.

Suddenly a tingling sensation covered his entire eye socket, and the pain that he felt when he tried to look at the light faded slowly. The woman then pressed the cold compress to the side of his face.

"It should be fine if you keep this on your face for a little while. And don't mind the smell. That ice was used to keep the fish fresh before I cook it." The woman said before looking up at Mary with a smile.

"I think he will be just fine. How about you take him back to his parents before they start to worry. You can't just kidnap younger boys, you know?" The woman in the white Apron scolded Mary as Kalon couldn't get over the fact that his eye seemed to be completely healed.

"W-what did you just do?" Kalon stuttered out as the woman looked down at him once again and then moved a finger in front of her lips to silence him.

"But I was responsible for injuring him, so it's my responsibility to make sure that his injuries aren't life-threatening." Mary tried to explain herself, but the woman wearing the Apron had heard enough.

"It's fine. There was just a little bump on his head. But for now, make sure you take him back home before your father gets home. You know what he is like when he finds out that we have unexpected visitors." In response to Mary's explanation, the woman said as Kalon stood still, not knowing what to say or if he should interrupt them, but the older woman was correct. Kalon had to get back to the tavern before anyone could find out that he was missing.

"Fine, I will. But are you really sure that he will be okay? I don't want to take him home, and then he dies as soon as he sees his parents. That would be a little too awkward for me to explain." Mary asked as Kalon felt a slight bit of worry. However, the pain had gone entirely. The fact that she thought he might die and became concerned about just how bad his injuries were.

"He's fine, I promise you. And if he does die, then I will personally take responsibility for it. So leave and let me finish preparing dinner for your family in peace." The woman in the white Apron demanded before pointing to the door.

Mary sighed and took Kalon's hand once again before guiding him back outside.

"You had better not die on me, okay?" Mary said as she turned around and gazed into Kalon's eyes. It was at that moment that Kalon realised that she wasn't much older than him. Her skin was pale and unweathered as if she had spent her whole life indoors, and her features were still those of a child. It made him feel a little better knowing that it wasn't some strange adult but, in fact, another child that had taken him home with her.

"I don't plan to die just yet." Kalon beamed his innocent smile as he looked at her with trusting eyes.

"Good," Mary looked away quickly as she saw him smiling and patted her cheeks slightly with the hand she had free before looking down at her other hand to know that she had her fingers locked with his.

"Ah, I'm sorry!" She shouted as she felt a little embarrassed by what she had just done, but it didn't seem to bother Kalon one bit as he became confused as to why she was acting so strangely.
