After further investigation, by the police into the matter, no new evidence was found and the person in charge of the case, the sheriff was losing hope of solving it as Michael was still standing by his word and saying he didn't kill her.

By the way it was going they might have to release him as the evidence they had against him isn't conclusive and strong enough. The eye witness, old Mr Ryan's words weren't enough as was old and had bad eye sight. And Michael's presence at the crime scene could be explained as he was her boyfriend and had definitely spent more than enough time in her house for his fingerprint to be everywhere.
