Missing shot

The signs were all there. She took me for a fool. How could she and my bestfriend...?

I had met Mary four years ago. She was a lovely woman, strong and independent. She said she never believed in love and that people are delusional. But she still dated me and we were steady for four years. Hell! I even thought she loved me.

But what I didn't see was the obvious. For the past few days, I caught her secretly signalling James,my best friend since childhood, whenever he visited. For last few weeks he has been frequenting my house more than usual. I have caught them whispering things behind my back and they would act like nothing happened whenever I catch them.

I found some receipts in her bag the other day. It was for a watch. The watch which James showed me next day as a gift from special someone.

They had the audacity to cheat on me and flaunt it on my face. But I will not tolerate betrayal. Mary was the love of my life and James was my brother. I am going to let James live. But for Mary, she is going to be back with me forever.

When I came home from work early, She was in the kitchen. James was in the hall. He looked flustered , like getting caught red handed. I went to my room and grabbed the gun I had brought from a dealer. It was fully loaded. But all I need is exactly two bullets in there. One for her, One for me. It will be quick ,precise and over soon.

She came behind me into the room.

"I have something to say to you." She was smiling.

Here it comes, the confession.

She looked beautiful when she smiled nevertheless.

She was about to open her mouth when the bullet pierced through her head into her brain. She fell back shocked expression still on her face. She died before she even got time to react. I didn't wanted her to be in pain. I went forward and closed her eyes. Now She slept peacefully. As I was to pull trigger ,I noticed a small box in her hand. James ran into the room and was shocked to see Mary lay dead on the floor . He fell on his knees clearly not knowing what to do next. He quickly crawled forward and took the gun from my hand in a quick flash and threw it across the floor. I couldn't move my body. It was as if the sky just fell upon me. I went numb.

The box that laid in Mary's hand housed a watch. The same model as James'.Inside it was a little note:

"Happy Birthday My Love! It seems I am now delusional. I love you? Will you marry me?"

They had planned a surprised for me.All those secret signals, shoping together, everything was a part of plan for tonight. She was going to propose to me. She loved me. She only thought of me.

As the police and paramedics arrived on the scene, I sat by the corner and all I could see was Mary sleeping peacefully and the gun that laid on the floor with a missing shot.
