Chapter 21: Poison
Seeing the Duke, Tao Jian Kang, in that state made Duchess Tao uncomfortable.
"It's okay mother. Father's going to be okay." Tao Fu Jin patted Duchess Tao's back and comforted her.
"Fu'er, my child..."
"Mother, if you're uncomfortable with being in the room, would you like to go out for some fresh air?" Tao Fu Jin asked.
Feng Ming Xiu looked at Duchess Tao. "Duchess Tao, I agree with your son. If you're uncomfortable with seeing the Duke in such a state, it would be best to leave. Of course, I'm not telling you to leave. You can stay if you want to."
"I know you're looking out for me but, I'll stay." Duchess Tao smiled.
"Okay." Feng Ming Xiu nodded. "So can I start?"
"Yes." An elder said.
With their permission, Feng Ming Xiu went to the bed and took out a pair of gloves from her innerspatial ring. She put them on and checked the Duke's pulse.
Feng Ming Xiu removed her hand as soon as she put them on his pulse. "When did the Duke start showing signs that he wasn't feeling well?"
The elders looked at each other and one of the elders, elder Tao Jun, said: "The Duke went to Thousand Beast Forest last week, and some friends of the Duke who were there with him said that on the day that they were supposed to leave the forest, they ate soup. After they left the forest to head home, the Duke started vomiting a lot. They had to stop a lot because the Duke wanted to go to the bathroom every time."
"They visited a doctor on the way and the doctor said that the Duke had diarrhea and gave him some pills. But, when they reached here, the Duke suddenly collapsed. After that, we called in many doctors, but none of them were able to tell what happened to the Duke."
Feng Ming Xiu looked at the Duke and said: "The Duke has cyanosis. This is when the skin gets a blue tint because there's not enough oxygen in the blood. He has also consumed a part of the pink oleander and the coral tree."
"Consuming any part of the coral tree can cause shortness of breath, cyanosis, weakness, and light-headedness. If an adult consumed little of it, it won't do any harm to the person, but consuming a lot of it is dangerous. Consuming the pink oleander causes dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, dilated pupils, and coma leading to death."
"Death?! So the Duke might die?" The elders asked.
'That's what I said.'
"Yes. My guess is that a large amount of the seeds of these two plants were crushed up and put in his food. If this was a normal person, they would have already died."
But some elders were suspicious.
"You didn't even have your hand on the Duke's pulse for five seconds, and you already know so much about his condition?"
Feng Ming Xiu stared at the elder. "If you don't trust me, you can always send me out."
"You-"
"Elder Ling. Doctor Long Bai is our only hope of curing the Duke. So I think we should trust her."
"You believe her?" Elder Ling Yi was infuriated.
"I'll only believe her if she cures the Duke." Elder Tao Jun said.
The Duchess watched on with cold eyes. 'As I expected, Doctor Long Bai found out quickly. This is why I didn't want him to come. But those old men would have been suspicious if I refused to let him come. Well, no one would know it was me anyway. I'll just have to find another way to kill him.'
"Yes, Elder Ling Yi. We should trust Doctor Long Bai."
"So do you want me to treat the Duke or not?"
Elder Tao Jun nodded. "Sure. If you need anything, we'll get it right away."
The Duke suddenly started coughing, and Feng Ming Xiu immediately stood up and looked around the room. She saw a bucket and held the Duke and pulled him to the end of the mattress. After letting him lie on his stomach, she put his head over the bucket and the Duke started vomiting.
The room was filled with a rotten stench and everyone backed away to the door.
Feng Ming Xiu saw that the colour of the vomit was a dark red colour. Feng Ming Xiu frowned. 'He's bleeding in his stomach.'
After the duke was finished vomiting, Feng Ming Xiu raised his head and let him lay on the bed on his back.
Feng Ming Xiu looked back at the others. "I'm going to treat the duke now, so you all would need to leave because I need absolute silence."
"Okay, Doctor Long Bai." Everyone left the room and closed the door.
Feng Ming Xiu looked back at the duke and sighed.
'I'm going to be spending a while in here.' Feng Ming Xiu checked the duke's pulse once again. 'Hmm. This kind of internal breathing in his stomach can heal on its own, so I don't have to worry about that. I just have to deal with the poison of coral tree and oleander. It might take half a day or longer.'
'Does it have those herbs in the garden?' Using her divine sense, Feng Ming Xiu checked through the garden in the mystical pagoda space. She chose some herbs from the garden, and they appeared in her hands. Feng Ming Xiu also took out a furnace.
Feng Ming Xiu sighed. 'This space that has such a large amount of space, and it can also grow stuff in it.'
After half a day in the room, Feng Min Xiu finally left the room.
There were three guards guarding the door and when they saw her they greeted her. "Hello, Doctor Long Bai. Could you tell me whether the operation was a success or not so that I can report to the duchess?"
"The duchess told you to do that?"
The guard nodded. "Yes."
"Well, tell the duchess that it was a success and the duke should wake up in three days. I will be going to my room."
"Okay." The guards bowed and went to report to the duchess."
Feng Ming Xiu went to her room and lay on her bed, and soon she fell asleep.
Feng Ming Xiu slept through the entire day up until the next day.
She woke up in the morning hungry. Feng Ming Xiu brushed her teeth and let her skin cool off by the time she let someone prepare a bath for her. After she bathed, Feng Ming Xiu went to the living room and waited until the maid brought her breakfast.
