Chapter 32: Kafu Border
It took roughly two weeks for Vis to arrive at the Kafu Border.
It was a border named after General Kafu who had slaughtered all his enemies here with an army under his command.
Since it was General Kafu's first mission, the border changed its name and people preferred it anyway.
This was only for Merthic Empire, though.
Because the news flew faster than the carriages, Vis assumed that soldiers from this border would wait for him.
"It's not like I expected a grand welcome," Vis commented uncared as he looked at the border.
It was a great wall that spanned over a thousand kilometers! Built with the old metal from old times, the wall had been receiving a lot of new resources which made the borders indomitable!
Since there were new lands won from the Kuyu Empire, there were also a lot of commoners building the new parts.
They had their tents next to the construction and worked in an orderly manner while maintaining a proper schedule.
Not too far away from those, military tents could be seen.
There was one big tent that belonged to the general here and other smaller ones! All of those had nice luxury compared to the commoners.
But that was the reality.
"The Fifth Prince?" An old voice rang out from below. It was an old soldier whose experience reeked off his body, but the age couldn't be beaten by it at all.
Despite his old age, the man continued to serve and fight at the borders as if his sole purpose had been to fight and fight…
This old man was one of the experienced people here and advisor of the general.
"Merthic M. Vis," Vis replied, "I am here with just my maid. Thanks for coming." He laughed heartily, then came closer to the old man.
The wall continued to get bigger the more they walked, "Forgive our general for not welcoming you, but the common view of the fifth prince is…" The old man spoke about Vis' infamous view, but the prince just raised his hand.
"Old man Henry… I would feel far better if you spared me from those superfluous explanations. I know very well how I am viewed by others," Vis replied.
The old man Henry sighed and said, "I am confident His Majesty The Emperor wouldn't send his son to death." He smiled, "Young Prince must have changed."
Vis just shrugged, but these words reminded him of his recent night thoughts.
The Emperor wasn't someone weak and the Soul Collector shouldn't defeat Vis' father that easily. Although the gap could be imagined by Vis, The Emperor wasn't a person who wouldn't see through his son.
Because of that, Vis was highly convinced his father knew about the Soul Collector's powers and it was partially, if not the whole, reason why he got sent here.
The old man and Vis exchanged some courtesy, then became closer as the surroundings hadn't been so welcoming.
All those eyes didn't even need to be explained.
Vis knew that they were looking at him as if he was a failure.
'The useless prince was here to snatch some achievement' was written in their eyes!
Soldiers and people looked differently at Miku, but it was a charm of a woman with beauty.
Since it was annoying, Vis quickly entered the general's tent. At the end of it, the man in military uniform sat by the table. His uniform was black and he had three stars embroidered on his shoulders.
His hair was also black and he wore glasses. His face was distorted after Vis glanced at him, but it soon eased up and the man just smiled faintly, "Do you smell it?"
"Smell? Smell what?" Vis replied.
"A death," The general answered then spread his arms, "There had been a great battle recently. So many bodies fell, weapons lodged deeply! Blood continued to spill even after its end! Can't you smell the death lingering in this land and tent?"
"To be honest… I can't smell the real death… and anything lesser smells like shit so I would rather not smell it at all," Vis' words just opened the general's eyes wider.
He mentioned the Soul Collector through this exchange, then other necromancers who played with death and bodies!
The general just scrutinized Vis, but the old man Henry waved his hands so the attention shifted to him, "What is it?"
"General Fran… This is too much, isn't it?" Henry sounded as gentle as possible, "It's the first time for Young Prince to step on the battlefield. He has a lot to learn and such superfluous words don't seem misplaced…"
"Hah... I can tell what you think, old man Henry…" General Fran shook his head, "You believe he has changed because His Majesty The Emperor has sent him here. Don't delude yourself and wait for the results first… As for my words, I just wanted to see his reaction."
Vis chimed in, "It's good that General Fran has enough talent to step and win on the battlefield because your so scary words were too lame."
"Sure, I won't be a poet in my spare time. But what about you? Can you be the fifth prince with enough contribution to the empire or will you just enjoy your royal privileges and confine yourself in the palace after this?" General Fran knew he sucked at drama and writing.
But his words meant that he would protect Vis here so his loyalty was real and genuine. The general comfortably leaned on his chair, his hand going up to hold his face.
He waited for Vis' answer…
"I will do my job and leave. That's as simple as that," Vis had thoughts of just ignoring this whole order during a night.
But he quickly shoved it away after assuming that the emperor knew about his undead army.
The silence then ensued between the three men.
No one seemed to have anything to say, but Vis had been waiting for the general to provide some information.
From looking at his three stars, Vis could tell that this was a powerful man.
Other than twelve generals who had been classified through roman numeral, there were other generals whose years of serving and their achievements were awarded through stars.
The strongest and the most accomplished generals had five stars.
One could get three stars solely based on years of serving, but it was not easy to survive on the battlefield.
"What are you waiting for?" Vis asked.
"Hmm?" The General replied with question marks in his eyes.
The fifth prince continued, "Your recent reports had said that you suspect a powerful army from the Kuyu Empire to embark. What exactly do you know about their movements? What about our army, its people, and weapons. Why do you try to act dramatic and just keep your mouth sealed? Didn't I say that I will get my job done here?"
"Oh, so you were serious? Very well. Old man Henry, take care of our prince and introduce him to everything," General Fran replied, then raised his hand. He nicely requested the two men to leave his tent.
After Vis left, General Fran's face became expressionless.
His mind began to rampage with thoughts, "A useless man suddenly got an official order to come here… The old man's thoughts might be accurate… In this case… Should I…"
