An Electrifying Experience

That evening, after returning to Stephan's house, Dawn was excited about discovering two new talents that day. She hadn't known or even thought about new talents like Stephan's builder talent that combined the seer and the mover talent. Or like the pusher talent Holly and Rachel had that let them make others feel how they wanted them to feel by combining the listener and feeler talents. Wondering what possibilities the newly discovered talents could be used for, and thinking about what other talents that Holly and Rachel might have, she also was thinking about what she could discover when she tested them as soon as they were available in the next couple of days. She was so caught up in thinking about all of the new stuff she had discovered that day that she impulsively decided that the darkness of the evening would hide her use of her floater talent and allow her to fly home like she had secretly done to get to Stephan's that morning. So, after saying farewell to Stephan and Jessica, she lifted herself into the air and gleefully floated over the field that was between their houses thinking about all that she had found out about that day.

As she leisurely floated over the field towards her house she was completely absorbed in thinking about what Stephan had already knew what to do with his builder talent. She was also caught up in wondering about how strong she herself would be at the talent and tried to build her a ring of some sort around her finger with the builder talent but was only able to build a temporary one of ice out of all of the water vapor that was in the air around her. She then tried to build one out of steel or any other metal she could think of but had gotten so involved in thinking about the outstanding uses of Stephan's talent and in trying to teach herself how to use the builder talent that, as she floated over the tall electric fence that surrounded her home, she mistakenly forgot to make sure she was far enough over the fence to be clear of it and it's powerfully high voltage.

Her distraction thus caused her to misjudge her distances and, just as she was passing over the fence and thought she could land, her hand came close enough to the fence for the small bit of metal on her finger from the small sliver of a ring that she had been trying to build on her way home attracted the powerful electric current and a large surge of the electricity arced itself from the fence to her hand. As the powerful current then surged through her, Dawn was so startled at the shock that she forgot to maintain her levitation and fell the full thirty feet to the ground. Falling uncontrolled, she brutally landed on her side and broke several or the bones in her leg, foot, and her ribs.

With her energy already being seriously depleted from using all of her talents to test Stephan's talents earlier, her impulsively using her floater talent to get home, her trying to learn how to use the builder talent, along with her body now having to use what available energy she had left to heal the bones and other damage from the thirty foot fall, Dawn felt weak and so she contacted Wanda for assistance in making it to her rooms while healing. Seconds later, when she tried to stand, a fresh and brutal stab of pain along with her talents being seriously taxed for energy from having her leg and foot already broken and her body trying to speed up the healing enough to enable her to walk on it, Dawn's body and energy had been pushed too far and the serious depletion of energy caused her to pass out from the overload of that sharp pain when she tried to put weight on her broken leg.

As she passed out and unconsciously fell backwards she ended up in a sitting position with her back resting against the electric fence. With the constant contact from the fence she was thus received full jolts of electricity every couple of seconds. The near constant electrical charge caused her shirt to char and start smoking as the huge amount of electricity that should have been continuing the fence's electric circuit was instead being stopped and absorbed by her body lying against it. Surprisingly though, while each surge of power was charring her shirt, each charge would only leave the part of her body that was directly touching the fence looking like she had received a mild sunburn or had gotten slapped in that shape instead of blistering or burning from the heat and small flames coming from the clothes as they continued to char.

When Wanda arrived a couple minutes later and saw Dawn laying against the fence, she also saw how Dawn's body had caused the fence to trip one of the fence's circuit breakers. But, being cautious, she still used her foot to push Dawn onto her side and then grabbed the rubber sole of Dawn's shoe and pulled her far enough away from the fence to enable her to safely grab Dawn without worrying about getting shocked herself. When a security guard then came running up a few seconds later and asked her if she knew why the fence had stopped working in her area, Wanda quickly told him in a stern voice, "Me and Dawn were walking and she tripped and hit this cursed damn fence and it gave her so strong of a shock that it knocked her unconscious. So to keep this humongous toy of yours from killing her I had to run and flip the switch in the fuse box and just got back myself."

The security guard, thinking of his training in how to respond to people contacting the fence and receiving electric shocks from it, then worriedly asked, "But why did you run to the fuse box instead of calling for one of us to help you?"

Wanda then drew herself up into a stern matronly stance and replied, "Because I was here when they built this place and already knew where that fuse box was instead of having to run around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to find one of you lazy young-ins that have only been here a couple years."

The security guard, realizing who she was and the position she held, then stuttered his reply, "Uh...Um...S-sorry ma'am. D-do you need me to help you carry her inside to the nurse's station then?"

Wanda then made use of her authority and replied, "Being as I am the head nurse I will accept your offer. Now pick her up and follow me. Lord knows we don't want the boss to find out how close his daughter came to getting killed by this humongous electric fence you inattentive security guys had him install years ago."

"Oh! Yes Ma'am!" the guard emphatically agreed and eagerly carried Dawn inside to the nursing area, laid her on the indicated bed, and quickly returned to his assigned post to avoid any further reprimands.

After the guy had returned to his station after flipping the tripped circuit breaker back on to restore power to the fence, Wanda carefully removed Dawn's mostly destroyed shirt in case it had caused any burns to her back that hadn't healed yet. She then gave her a full checkup to see how well she had healed from the fall and the near constant electrical current she had been receiving before the breaker had finally tripped off.

After giving her an x-ray and MRI, Wanda was surprised to see that her bones had healed back perfectly even though none of them had been set back straight after the fall. She also kept seeing the machine show magnetic interference from some unknown source until she finally found the sliver of a ring that was so small it looked more like a small wire around her finger. After taking off the ring that had been turned into a magnet, Wanda was getting a much better result but was still getting some unexplainable random interference.

As she continued with her full exam Wanda was also wondering at the surprisingly faster healing than usual for Dawn's ability as well as the perfect healing given the absence of any alignment or any kind of attendance to the injuries while they were healing. She was also surprised at how when she would lean over Dawn to check on different areas, her necklace and her pen would act like they were being attracted to another magnet other than her attempted ring. So, after completing her exam and making sure that Dawn healed back up from the injuries and the excessive voltage she had been receiving from the fence, Wanda checked for any radiation or any magnetic forces being given off by Dawn and discovered that she was slightly magnetic from the current and was also able to give a full MRI and x-ray results even though the machines had been turned on to show the displays but not used to emit any radiation or magnetism of their own.

After doing a couple more tests to confirm her results, Wanda was certain by the time she finished her last test to prove her theory that Dawn had absorbed all of the electricity from the fence while she had been passed out against it and was now so charged up that she wouldn't have been surprised to see her glowing when she turned off the light and went to her own bed.
