Chapter 73: There Is No I In Team

By the time I wake up, Evanora and Seraphina have gone. Rick and I eat a quiet breakfast together, the upcoming task weighing heavy on our hearts. We are suddenly interrupted by Lydia of all people and I notice she has a defeated look in her eyes.

“I wanted to apologize to you both for the actions of my son,” she says softly.

I feel a surge of sympathy for her. No matter how she has treated me in the past, she is a mother who has lost contact with her only son and I imagine she is in a great deal of pain.

“It’s not necessary, Lydia. You had nothing to do with it,” I say kindly.

“I never encouraged him to manipulate Raven, but I have always encouraged him to become powerful and strong and take what he wants. I spent too much time doting on him and not enough teaching him to earn his way in the world and be honorable. It is my deepest regret,” she replies.

She is obviously having a very hard time getting her words out so I stand up and put a hand on her shoulder in comfort.
