Chapter 86: Mourning

“What do you mean, ‘gone?’” Waverly asked, panicked. She knew what Katia meant, but she didn’t want to admit it. Her eyes glossed over, and a tear escaped.

Katia stared at her and simply nodded. She started to cry and bit her lip to prevent it from becoming a full-blown event. The stood still together for a moment and then Katia took a stabilizing breath before turning her attention to the crowd that was waiting patiently to see what had happened, attempting to calm the pack.

Waverly swore she felt the Earth move under her feet. This couldn’t be happening—everything was okay, everyone was okay and now…

She then found the courage to move and forced herself through to the front of the crowd. Due to the chatter, Waverly was unable to hear; however, in the glass windows, she could see Sawyer talking to the emergency workers. His back was turned to her, but she could tell his temper was flaring. The men he was talking to tried to relax him, but Sawyer rebuffed their efforts.
