A seedling stood under the sun of the balcony of a duplex apartment.
The apartment looked luxurious at first glance, however once one looked a little bit more, they'd realize that nobody had swept it for at least two or three weeks, with only an old couch and a coffee table in the middle of it.
You could also notice a few take out boxes here and there on the coffee table and couch, and a few photos hanging on the walls. It all spoke of past glory, of a place that once was probably the love-nest of a couple, judging by the amount of rooms that it had, which was 3 rooms.
Back on the balcony, you would notice a few plants already forgotten in one of the corners, and in the others, various seedlings that looked all to be about the same, all except for the before mentioned seedling, which was a little bit bigger than the others, with 3 small but healthy leaves.
Different from all the other seedlings, that just had 2 small and a little weak leaves, characteristic from newly sprouted plants.
'I think I would rather not be strong if it meant that all my sisters didn't die or have to go through the burning'
Kuth'Sih had been thinking that for the majority of her admittedly short life, she was now 9 days old, and though she was still a seedling, one could already see that she was one that seemed sturdier than the others, even her living sisters who went through similar experiences than her.
She was what some would call a prodigy, since for some reason, even with the fact that her sisters had Natural Mana Affinity, she was still a little abnormal.
Kuth'Sih had been experimenting with her abilities, after discovering that the burning actually strengthened her and her sisters, she started trying to develop it into a more harmless practice, so that she could perhaps help her sisters from afar.
Even if it made her sisters just a little bit more likely to survive, she needed to do SOMETHING, otherwise what sort of big sister would she be?
It took some time for her to manage to use the Ambient Mana, since she didn't have a Mana pool like Joshua did, but eventually, through sheer talent and determination, she discovered a way to move the Ambient Mana slightly.
So she continued then with coming up with a way to strengthen herself and her sisters safely, and finally, on her 6th day of life, she finally managed to come to a somewhat useful and pretty harmless practice, and once she managed it

*System has detected that the user has developed a unique technique involving Mana*
*would you like to submit this technique as a skill in exchange for 50 EXP?*
Exp? … oh right, that's the thing in the Status window…
'System, what is the use of EXP ?'
Since Kuth'Sih was just a seedling with three small and pitiful leaves, the amount of energy she produced daily wasn't enough to complete her daily mission, which caused a situation in which she didn't really pay attention to Exp, causing her ignorance at this moment.
*With EXP, the user may increase their level*
'… if I increase my level, will that help me protect my sisters?'
*Yes*
'then yes, give me the Exp'
*Extracting knowledge*
* +50 EXP *
What the innocent Kuth'Sih didn't know was that the one speaking wasn't the system, it was Joshua speaking through the system in order to scam the poor little strawberry
-------------
in another room on Joshua's home
a pale young man with brown hair and eye bags that could be seen from a mile away suddenly quirked his lips upwards, nobody knew why, but he was extremely pleased with himself at this moment.
After a little bit he smiled softly for a moment before his smile shifted to an ear to ear smile right before he started to laugh like a villain from one of those old comics.
One had to know that 50 EXP was equivalent to 5 Mana or 5 EP, and that he made about 7 EP per day, truly an evil scheme!
----------------
coming back to the little innocent strawberry seedling, she once again looked at her status

And said and done, she now had 50 EXP!
…
How much that was? She didn't know, she didn't quite understand how this system of quantities worked, but at least she knew it was a higher number than 9, which was good.
And now she knew that if she managed to come up with something that the system considered valuable, she might be able to earn more.
Perhaps she should come up with a way to defend herself from the Mana also, rather than just absorbing it, perhaps a way to channel it into others, or a way to use Joo'Suah's own technique against him…
Or more realistically, the few insects that she had seen pass around her and her sisters!
Kuth'Sih knew that she and her kind didn't live for too long, she felt it. She needed to leave something behind when she was gone, something for her sisters, and eventually her children!
So with this newfound goal of hers she started developing a way to copy Joo'Suah's way of using the Mana to hurt others, however, as previously stated, she did not have a significant pool of Mana inside her, so she needed to somehow use the Ambient Mana, this time, in a more significant way than when using her new skill
and talking about her new skill, before starting anything, she wanted to check something.

Once she saw her skills, she realized that the System had named the skill she created without her permission, which, even if it bothered her a bit, in the end she got her EXP, so she couldn't complain too much.
So she cleared her head, and started trying to get a hang on using Ambient Mana proficiently.

(Joshua POV)
"Yup! It's been a good day!"
Joshua lied in bed in quite a relaxed manner, he had been in a good mood since the system had told him this morning that a System user had come up with a skill
A SKILL!! One of the resources that Joshua needed the most when making the System, since it wouldn't make sense if a System of the kind that he was making didn't have any skills!
There were 2 ways of creating skills that Joshua knew of, one of them was commissioning it to the system, which then would charge an exorbitant amount of energy to Joshua, and only then would Joshua have 1 single skill, and also depending on the skill's complexity, the energy could increase.
The second way was having the knowledge about the skill, like, let's say you know how to cook.
In that case, you can ask the system to make a skill with that knowledge, and even then, the System would still charge a small amount of energy just for the transference of knowledge to the system.
Of course, if you had some knowledge to make a skill but not all of it, you could also commission the System to get the rest of the information to make the Skill, and the System would only charge for the information that it put towards the skill, plus a small fee for the transference of knowledge.
Now, Joshua never had the Illusion that the System was a magical thing that made wonders, he remembered the Briefing in the System space.
The System was probably something an alien or someone else gave Humanity to defend itself against an unknown threat, so Joshua assumed that were Humanity to be defeated, the aliens or whoever gave Joshua the system would be next in line to die, or suffer… or something! After all, who would just give something like the system away for free?
No, whoever the creator is or are, they are probably using humanity as a shield, or at least something to weaken the threat before it comes for them.
The point of all that yapping being, Joshua kinda understood the fact that the System most likely needed the energy in order to do whatever it was Joshua asked it to do.
That didn't mean that Joshua had to like it
The last couple of days, Joshua had finally been able to complete the Daily task twice, however, it was extremely challenging, and unrewarding.
Seriously! With the amount of energy that all that exercise generated, 20 EXP would be the minimum that Joshua would accept, but he had set it to 5 EXP each time you succeeded?
"WHO THE F*CK CAME UP WITH THIS STUPID SYSTEM ANYWAY?!"
… maybe im a little bit too shameless, am I not?
The last couple of days, whenever Joshua wasn't doing his daily task, or working, he had been studying basic chemistry, something he hadn't done since high school.
Why? The reason was that Joshua wanted to make fantasy materials.
Yes.
Joshua's first objective, was to find a metal that could store Mana, the more Mana it could store, the better it would be for Joshua.
The reason? Well, he was literally the only person who could at the moment, he always wanted to be some sort of scientist, and he was the only one who knew the existence of Mana.
So, in short, he wanted to accomplish his childhood dream.
He had been getting small pieces of common metals and seeing how much Mana they could store, what would happen if he went over the limit that they could store, and what would happen if they were exposed to Mana for a long time.
When he said a long time, of course, he meant about an hour, which was the limit of his now 5 Mana could last if he kept using.
The results had been interesting to say the least.
Joshua had discovered that iron wasn't that good at storing Mana, copper was a little better, gold was really bad at storing it and silver was extremely good at storing it, but it tended to degrade if you stored the maximum amount of Mana it could carry.
However, when these metals were exposed to Mana for a long time, their characteristics were amplified depending on the amount of Mana they were exposed to.
Of course, in the case of gold, it was really hard to expose it to Mana since the longer you exposed it to Mana, the more it started to push the Mana away from it.
Joshua thought that perhaps, with enough control and Nana, a super Anti-Mana metal could be made.
Perhaps one day, a piece of gold the size of a thumb could even affect the whole planet if exposed for enough time to Mana and with a sufficient amount of it!
Though perhaps the law of diminishing returns would start to kick in at some points... Joshua truly had no idea, and to be quite honest, even though he wished he were, he wasn't a scientist, or at least not at the moment, but perhaps if he kept studying how materials interacted with Mana, and classical chemistry, he could just become a great scientist?!
At the end of the day, Joshua just wanted to let humanity survive and perhaps accomplish his childish dream.

(AN: just to clarify, seeds take about 6 weeks to germinate according to google, then 6 weeks more to put them on their own pot, and then 6 more weeks to turn into grown plants that are able to go out on their own to the unknown, and by unknown, I mean your garden.
When the system says her age as 6 days old, it means it's been 6 days since she stopped being a seed and turned into a seedling and im assuming she already has 1 or two tiny leaves, now…
I'm pretty sure it's not that clear-cut in real life and I might be grossly misinterpreting the info I got, after all not all you read is true, but let's roll with it for the sake of simplicity shall we?
Also, i have a discord? i just made it so some things might not work as intended at the moment but i'd appreciate if you take a look, i'll put it on the synopsis and under this, if any of you are interested)
