“You okay?” I asked feeling bad because I hated when that happened.
Remi nodded but still said nothing then took another small sip of her water. “Went down the wrong pipe.”
“Yeah, no kidding,” I said, smiling and soothing her back with my hand. “Better?”
She nodded, and I bunched all the napkins we used toward the end of the table so the waitress could take them when she came by. I almost forgot what I’d started to say just before Remi’s coughing fit. Then it came to me. “Did you know him?” I asked, taking another bite of my pie.
Remi nodded, glancing around as she drank more water. Then I remembered. “That’s right. You used to watch them. My aunt and Trace mentioned that.”
