Chapter 26: The Pieces Come Together

Slowly the great ship came to life. Beacons were alight after decades of darkness. Nuclear plasma was boiling somewhere. Miles of corridors began filling with a soft rush of air after a long dark age of stale vacuum. Four huge G cylinders two hundred meters in diameter began trundling around the great axis. Missiles were tenderly being thawed in the nose, lasers covertly focused, defense stations lubed and diagnosed. The robots were awakened.

The ship floated amid hundreds of other darkened hulks in this graveyard called Point Darkside at the far end of earthÕs orbit opposite the sun. The Fleet and the big shipping concerns dumped their obsolete machines here because it was cheaper than demo at the Lagrange marinas.
