"Oh, mama cried, she did." The Rathen closed his eyes, seeing who knew what, and when he opened them again, they were filled with tears. "The last time I saw her I was all spiffed out in my dress whites. My spacers' duffel flung over my shoulder. My dad, he slapped me on the back and said 'Boy, I'm so proud of you! Proud, you're a brave man!' Then I walked up the gantry without a single glance behind me. And I never saw them again." The Rathen looked down at his feet, his face twisted, and he cried like a child. Saddam had no idea what to do or say, so stood shocked and silent.
"Physics." The Rathen looked up into Saddam's eyes. Sharp. His cheeks were glistening with tears. "Now just what do you think a black boy like me knew about physics?"
Saddam shook his head, not knowing what to say.
