The mains sputtered to life and ten million pounds of fire pushed 3g's like now. Already moving tremendously fast relative to anything that happened to be floating in space near it, the ship pushed ever and on, faster and faster, reaching for that magic- impossible C number, fast as photons. A field manifested, tingling along the ship's outstretched inductors. Tachyons were detected - those elusive neither here nor there particles that skidded along the interface between normal and hyperspace - they were enfolded, grasped by the field and they in turn grabbed the field, and whatever else was enfolded by it, and bounced it through and off the boundary, the face of the boundary itself, and into the realm of hyperspace where the rules were different. The field dumped off the tachyon particles after that first nontime instant. It didn't need them anymore. Tachyons belong to that narrower place, the interface itself.
