Chapter Three

The Arizona heat is intense. When the sunlight touches you at 4,000 feet, it's electrifying and exhausting at the same time.

Growing up in Phoenix there's no escape from the heat, you get used to it. You adapt.

It's what you do.

Phoenix is my home. I've never lived anywhere except our tiny 2 bedroom house across the street from my best friend, Bree.

Bree moved in when we were 7, and we've been bound at the hip ever since.

Here's the problem:

About six months ago my dad was offered a huge new job position, so as soon as I get out of this shithole hospital, my parents and I are moving to Denver.

My dad got a new job managing a handful of marijuana dispensaries down town.

I'm scared to move, I can't stop wondering what will happen here when I leave.

What about Bree and I?

What about my senior year?

What about our house?

Someone else is just going to take my room?

It's not fair.
