"You agreed," Wang Jingyuan said breathlessly. "You came to the Capital with him."

Lu Shuangyun nodded. "To be frank, I did not care who he actually was–all that mattered was that we were in love. Jiu-lang told me he loved me; he promised we could be together. To me at the time, that was enough. So I agreed to leave my hometown behind and go with him to the Capital." 

Xiao Moxian looked down at the table. He had already heard this story several times. Each time, he wished that his mother had said no, so that she would not have suffered so much heartbreak and grief within these palace walls. Although that would mean that he would not be a prince, Xiao Moxian would rather that his mother and he live a happy life as a normal family, with a normal, loving father. 

"And then what happened?" Wang Jingyuan asked.
