Chapter 10

'Variety'' was the very first publication to break the news about Scott and Brandon being cast as the two lead actors on Jake Klosterman's new project. Once the story broke, Scott's phone had been ringing all day with congratulations from friends, family, past colleagues. Amanda had sent him a text with so many heart emojis that it must have broken her previous record. Scott knew she was holed up somewhere in Cancun with the real love of her life, Carmen Del Ruga. Of course, no one knew that except for Scott and Amanda's family.

So many years ago, when Scott and Amanda had been first cast as the shiny teenage stars of the Basketball High series, they'd quickly discovered just how much online buzz their genuine friendship had been generating. But Amanda was a lesbian, while Scott was still struggling with his sexual identity and not yet ready to come out of the closet. Their agents had also hinted very strongly that they might both be recast if the studio, the family-friendly Big Mouse Productions, ever discovered that their two young stars were gay.

So Scott and Amanda had agreed to date. It had seemed like the perfect arrangement at the time: Scott could fend off all the advances he was getting on a daily basis, while Amanda could keep her girlfriend on the down low. But now, six years later, it had chipped away at Scott like a horrible disease. He hated that he couldn't be himself around anyone, except Liz, Pedro and Amanda. Even his parents were asking him when he and Amanda were going to get married.

Still, there was no way Scott could come out now, though. He stared glumly at the Variety headlines, slumping against his sofa. The Californian sun was shining through his open French windows, where Muffins was sunning herself, licking her paws clean. Scott sighed. He had the perfect life now. Was it worth upsetting everything by coming out?

Liz upheld her reputation as the most cutthroat agent in Hollywood by getting Scott a decent 5-million for the role, exactly the same as Brandon Beck. Scott concealed his surprise; Brandon was surely in much higher demand as an actor, with all those awards and nominations under his belt. How could Scott, a washed up teen star, even think about commanding the same salary?

"Just sign it," Liz muttered under her breath, when they were at the contract meeting with the studios. Scott's lawyers had looked over the contract and given it a thumbs up, so there was really nothing left to do but sign.

"I know." Scott shot Liz an appreciative smile, squeezing her hand under the table. Something in her diamond-tough exterior softened; Liz had always looked out for him, from day one, and Scott had no reason not to trust her. "Thank you, Lizzy."

Liz smiled back, patting his thigh. "Go on then, sign it. Anytime this century would be great."

Scott laughed as he picked up Jake Klosterman's expensive Mont Blanc pen, signing the dotted line with a flourish. It was only then that he looked up and noticed Brandon Beck had been watching him across the table, a slight smile on his own face.
