I stared at the man below me, eyes stricken with fear for his life. My grip tighten on the knife I held above my head.
"Please… spare me" he begged "I don't want to die" tears filled his eyes.
"You should have thought of that before. This is your faults" I drove the knife down.

Some hours ago…
A jeep pulled up into a drive way. I opened the door and took a look around my surroundings. Finally the big city, I thought.
Gemma, my twelve-year old sister also came out of the car grinning like an idiot. "The houses are so big, our house is so big"
"Stop it! You make it obvious that we are not city folk"
"That's because we aren't city folk"
Our dad popped the trunk and came out of the car too. "Less talking and more unloading" We picked up the boxes and carried them inside. I dropped mine to gape at the spacious room.
"It's so huge" I jogged around a bit to check the place out.
"It better be, I sold our entire farm off for this. Now bring in the rest of the boxes, if we work fast we can be done before dinner"
The place was already furnished with the necessities, all that was missing was our stuff to make it feel like home. We started unpacking our respective bedrooms first before we came down to help with the living room and kitchen.
My dad placed a picture frame on the shelf above the fire pit just as I came in. It was a picture of mom.
"Wish you could be here" dad said.
"Me too" I agreed and he wiped his tears before turning to me.
"Daryl hey, I didn't hear you come in… you done with your room?"
I nodded and headed over to the kitchen.
"I'll make dinner, you go ahead and take it easy" He smiled at me and continued decorating the shelf with our pictures.
Dinner was done in a bit and we ate while watching a little bit of television. Before we knew it, exhaustion kicked in and it was time to turn in for the day.

The next day I got ready for school. My dad wasted no time in enrolling us.
He parked the car by the side walk.
"There's the admin building" he pointed to somewhere afar. "You'll be handed your schedule and everything"
Gemma squealed and kissed dad on the cheek.
"By dad, love you" she left the car.
"Look out for her"
"I will" I smiled and left the car too.
I hardly spoke to anyone, because I was the new kid but a group's discussion caught my attention during lunch.
"Tonight's gonna be lit" one boy hyped.
"I heard they might extend the time"
"Really? This is going to be the best purge ever"
"Purge?" I whispered to myself.

Later that day when I got home I asked my father about it.
"So… tell me all about school today" he placed a tray of BBQ on the table.
"It was alright" I said.
"It was so cool, they're lots of different people and I made a new friend"
Trust my sister to befriend anyone she meets.
"I hope you'll get to play soon"
"We will. She said I can play purge with her later" she added.
"Hmm? What's purge? Is that a new game?"
"Dunno" she shrugged.
"I was actually going to ask you about it too dad, you don't know either?"
"Nope, never heard of it"
That made me more curious, could it be like one of those online games I heard about? I guess I'll have to wait later and see.
That evening we were at home just enjoying each others company when an announcement popped up on a channel.
"This is not a test. We interrupt this program to announce the commencement of our annual purge approved by the xx government. It shall commence at the sound of the siren, all crimes including murder will be legal for 12 hours. All emergency services will be suspended for the time period. Your government thanks you for your participation. May God be with you all."
The broadcast ended and the show came back on.
