They had agreed with Laszlo to make an excursion in the direction of the highlands of the center of the Island. Since they would not be able to return before nightfall, they took their tents and sleeping bags with them. The hermit only had a couple of tarpaulins that he stretched out and held above him by rods for the night. When he left the cabin he locked the door to prevent the entry of wild animals in search of food and the others could see that he was carrying in his hands the rifle that they had already seen when he received them at his house on a stormy night.

"Where did you get that rifle from?" Asked Xiang, who always had a youthful fascination for weapons. "Does it come from the Second World War?"

“No. It is actually much older. My grandfather used it in World War I and it was already an outdated weapon. It is a Mauser with a bolt from 1891 and although today it is obsolete in terms of speed, it has an admirable precision.
