Into The Pit

Mason looked down into the bowl, more of a pit really, at the top of the mountain, where the male dragon's body rested. He waited and watched at first, not wanting to move and alert anything to his presence. His gaze drifted over the piles of dead fish and the remains of the skeleton, still smelling as bad as they had the day before. The moon was nearly full, but the sky was littered with clouds, making it more difficult to see clearly. More than once, the shifting shadows of the clouds caused Mason to freeze, thinking it was something moving among the fish.

At last, he realized his initial judgement of the area had been correct. The pit was empty of anything left alive. It didn't look like the females had brought any new fish to the area, either. Mason wondered if they were closer to giving up than the others had thought. It would be nice if they could get through this without anymore problems arising.
