Chapter 8 - Abysmal Pit

I steadily look over the edge of a cliff, staring into what seems to be an endless abyss.

I pick up a rock, throwing it off the edge.

After some time, I hear a "Splosh!", looking around, I notice an unlit torch on the wall, beside a broken ladder.

I scour around the room, eventually stubbing my toe against a rock.

"Geh!" I screech, looking at what I stubbed my toe on.

A door opens across the room, 'What a bad place to hide a lever...' i think.

Walking over to the door, peeking in, and looking around the room.

I notice a skeleton on the ground, along with a bookshelf covered in spiderwebs.

There's also a wooden table that lays on its side across the room, with a wooden chair that's missing a leg.

I search around the room, finding spoiled foods, some copper coins, and a journal that was lying on the ground.

I open the journal, 'This is Italian, good thing I learned it as a second language.'.

I began translating it, reading it in my mind; 'It's my first day as a guard for the pit, I'm not gonna lie, it is not the job I expected it to be. I just usually sit here, killing passing goblins and slimes, but it's feeding me and my family, so I'm not gonna complain.

It is now my second day as a guard for the pit, I am starting to see things down there, it is scaring me. first, I thought I heard my daughter's voice, then I coulda swore I saw my wife climbing down the ladder. Now I've been hearing screams' I read, looking around and looking back down at the journal.

'I am scared, a goblin crawled out of the pit, but it was no normal goblin, it was pitch-black, and my strikes went through it. It was scared by the light though, as long as I stood near the light it would stay away, screeching. Whenever some knights appeared with torches, they disappeared. I'm scared, what if I don't make it much longer? I want to stay with my family.' I continue.

I put the book down, walking out of the room, looking over the cliffside, 'I wonder what's down there?' I think

Turning around, looked around the room some more and pulled out a cloth from the pockets of his pants.

He pulls a piece of charcoal out of his other pocket, using it to draw out a map.

'I'm glad I bothered taking the map of the dungeon from that dead guy.' I think.

I smile, looking down at the map.

'I should explore this place some more before I head out, I don't know if the monsters are weaker or stronger out there.' I think, following the map further into the cave.
