Shannon narrowed her eyes and sipped the last of her mocha, crumpling the cup in anger. "Yeah? Well I wish I'd never made her mistake."

Samael flinched. "What mistake?"

"Falling for you," she said. "You're like black coffee- acidic, bitter aftertaste, but I'm addicted to the caffeine. I should have known all you'd bring me was heartburn and bad withdrawal."

"Heartburn? Withdrawal?" Samael pressed.

"Heartburn, heartache. Same difference," Shannon said, bitter. She tossed her cup into a dumpster behind them. "And the withdrawal's missing you."

He was baffled. "Just contact me. Hell, you know how to summon me now. I'm at your beck and call-"

"I don't want to distract you. This war's far more important than us. That's why I shouldn't be here. Why this thing between us is unhealthy. I'm a distraction, an added casualty you don't need-"
