Roi's Pov:
I put my hair up and got out of bed. I brushed my teeth and washed my face. Then I proceeded to get dressed. It was a simple day for me. A day off from pressing matters. I buttoned my jeans and pulled on a pair of white socks. I headed to the next room over and entered. I looked at the little being sleeping on my floor and I sighed.
"Today isn't normal. Must have forgotten." I mumbled. I walked deeper into the room and beant over the small child. She slowly looked up at me and I smiled. This is the first time I've ever failed a mission. If Sykes found out about this then I'd surely be in trouble. I don't know what came over me. I was supposed to get rid of the entire family. Wipe them all out but when I saw the little girl I just couldn't do it. I couldn't get rid of the family. But it had been too late.
It was a day that I can't erase. When I got there things had already gone wrong. The wife was found dead in her bathtub and the husband was nowhere to be found. Now I managed to get rid of the wife's sister and the last of their scum but when it came to the kids I found my heart beating. It was a rash decision but I left the kids and then I got some of my connections on the phone.
It took a lot of strings being pulled and a few more underhanded tricks with the law but I was able to get them for myself which is also risky. My job is not a place for children, I don't even know why I adopted them in the first place.
"Good morning, honey." I said softly. The child whined and lifted her arms for me. I picked her up and smoothed out her curls. I got up and turned around to go to my kitchen when I came face to face with her brother.
"Good morning, Ben. Hungry?" I asked. He shrugged with a somber face and followed me to the kitchen. I put his little sister in her highchair before sitting him at the table.
"So what do you want for breakfast? I've got cereal, or do you want pancakes?"
"Mm." He shrugged. Ben was 2 years old and quiet. Sometimes I find him glaring at me and I wonder if he remembers me from that event or if he thinks ridiculously hard. It scares me but I just smile and continue being nice.
"I'll tell you what I'll make some eggs and pancakes for breakfast and you are going to help." This captured his attention. He came up to me and instead of his glare he wrapped his arms about my legs. I patted his head and picked him up. I kissed his cheek and then went over to my sink. I helped him wash his hands and I got down the pancake mix and a big bowl. I sat him on the counter and we got straight to work.
As we were mixing the pancakes I couldn't help but to feel normal for once in my life. I felt like I didn't have the world on my shoulders and I didn't feel pressured to be who I currently was. I felt normal and ordinary. I enjoyed feeling like a regular person.
When breakfast was made I got the kids dressed and then we left my apartment. I had things to do and sadly since they are my little secrets, it was my job to watch them and keep them safe for the most part. I put them in my new car, one suited for family purposes.
Today was as ordinary as it could get for me. I haven't slept-in in a day in my life. I wasn't trained to. I was trained to get up and start my day. I was trained to get things done. I was trained by the time I was born. When I entered this world I just knew things. Where as compared to my sister she knew nothing. She's lucky. But her incompetence at times irritates me.
It took me hours until I reached my destination. By then the kids were asleep and for a moment I was thankful for that. I left the windows open a bit and got out opening my winter coat. I locked the doors to my car and then walked up the stairs to the house that I grew up in. I unlocked the door with my key and walked in. Right away I was thrown into the chaos of my so-called family.
"Roi!" I listened to the chirp and I turned my head towards it. My pregnant sister walked up to me and smiled. My pregnant twin I should say. She has always tried to bond with me in some type of way ever since we were small. There were times where I liked it. But my parents made sure that I never got comfortable with that knowledge. This obviously resulted in us having very different lives. Whereas she was allowed to get married and have a family, I never had that ambition or was allowed to have any of that. Which my twin doesn't understand to this day. She just thinks that I simply have trouble getting someone. Which I guess is not wrong. Just not exact.
"Hi Ria." I said and hugged her.
"How are you? It's been so long! Why don't you come around more?"
"You know how I am with mom and dad." Those words felt wrong in my mouth. My parents and I strictly have a professional relationship you can say. They never wanted to treat me like I was a part of the family and by the time I was five I gave up on the notion. But I can't say anything too bad. Especially about my so-called mother. I remember there were times where she did a few motherly things for me and I can tell she wanted to do more for me but my father was the overall deciding factor in her not getting attached to me.
"I still don't get why there is such tension between you guys."
"What do you want me to tell you?" I shrugged.
"Can you just try for once Roi?" I shook my head. She doesn't know and she won't ever know. I sighed.
"Where's dad?" I asked.
"In the kitchen with Tyrone." She groaned. She frowned at me but all I did was hug her again and kiss her cheek.
"How is Tyrone? Treating you right?"
"You know he does." She snapped.
"Good." Despite everything she was the closest person to me. Heck she is me. Actually I'm her. Well at least I look like her.
"Come on. Don't get mad. Just relax. You know how I am." I fixed her curls. Little does she know that I was trained to care and protect her by the time I was 4. If she was in danger I was to take her place instinctually. But for now I had other jobs to take care of and so far no threat has been made on Ria. Just on me. But that's the life I lead.
We walked into the house and my sister announced me to the whole entire room. I stood there awkwardly and lifted my hand saying a short hello. It was unnatural but so am I you can say.
"Hello sweetie." My mother was short with pretty brown skin and her hair was braided down. She had pink full lips and the kindest brown eyes. Today she seemed a bit happier to see me and I found it odd. She hugged me with a smile on her face and she kissed my cheek.
"Roi." My dad said wrapping an arm around my mom. My dad was handsome. But he was the lucky one. My mother barely aged and he although looked good for his age he wasn't the best looking guy out there. He was tall with green eyes and black and grey hair with a salt and pepper beard. He had pale white skin and rosy pink lips as well as very bushy eyebrows.
"Sir." I said.
"Why can't you two ever say hi, normally?" My mother pointed out and me and my father had a small stare off. She knew why. I don't know why she had a change in heart.
"Hi Tyrone." I ignored her question and said hi to my sister's husband.
"Hey, Roi. How's everything?" I prepared myself for this.
"Fine."
"Really? Nothing out of the ordinary?" My mother pressed.
"Nope." I said without a smile towards her.
"I was expecting you earlier Roi." My father said looking unimpressed.
"I had to run an errand before I came. Sorry." I lied. He raised an eyebrow at me.
"Well step into my office. We have things to talk about."
"Gladly." I scoffed.
"Are you going to stay for lunch?" My mother asked.
"Yani." My dad said giving her a pointed look that made her shrink a bit.
"Sorry mom. I have things to do." I shrugged.
"Oh. Well I'm cooking dinner tomorrow. Do you want to come over then? We haven't had you at a family dinner since Ria got married."
"Sorry mom. I would come but I have a lot to do."
"Okay."
"What do you have to do?" My sister put her two cents in. I looked at my father. He glared at me.
"Don't worry about it. Let's get this over with." I walked out of the kitchen pulling away from my family and my dad followed me. I stood outside of his office as he opened the door. I walked in and he gave me a once over before sitting down behind his desk.
"You look good." He complimented.
"Let's just skip the pleasantries. Why did you call me here?" I spat. He looked taken aback by my attitude all of a sudden. That was unlike him.
"Roi, you've been causing a lot of trouble."
"I was doing as I was told."
"Yes but you didn't."
"What are you talking about?"
"You're getting soft on me, Roi. We had you made for this kind of thing Roi. To clean up loose ends and you are slipping."
"Still don't know what you're talking about."
"You didn't wipe out that entire family."
"Of course I did. Nobody in that building survived." I lied again.
"There were children. Two to be exact."
"There wasn't anything in the file about kids."
"Roi do not mess with me!" He yelled.
"I'm not. Check the file." I snapped. He gave me a pissed off look before going on his computer and bringing up the file. My assignment as he likes to call it. He looked it over and his eyebrows knotted.
"I guess I didn't put that in there."
"How old were they?" I asked.
"Two and 6 months." He responded and for a second I felt my stomach knot up. Ugh! What's going on with me?
"They don't affect anything as they weren't there. If I had seen them they would have been flushed out sir. You know how thorough I am."
"Mhm." He hummed observing me.
"If I find out otherwise?"
"What?" I growled.
"Relax. You've been on edge as of lately." I was quiet. "You don't fool me Roi. I keep tabs on you. There is nothing that you don't do that I won't find out about." He hissed.
"What are you going to do about it?"
"Nothing." He said relaxed. Now I was weirded out.
"But!" Now that was more like it.
"I don't want to see any other emotion happen like this again. So far you have managed to cover your tracks effectively this way so I am not mad but the next time I see you give out any mercy I will have you terminated. Do you understand?"
"Yes sir." I frowned.
"Now, now. No need to be upset." He got up and gave me a pat on the back.
"Just do your job right and this doesn't need to happen."
"I'm not upset. I know better than to get upset."
"That's my girl." That was the only time he said that to me.
"Stay for lunch today. I will even allow you to sit at the table." For a moment I felt a spark of happiness in my heart. But knowing him everything comes with a cost.
"No thanks. I have things to do like I said."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, sir." I turned and walked out of his office. I wasn't dismissed but it didn't matter. The conversation was over. I left the house without saying goodbye to my sister and I got in my car.
I rolled the windows up and looked in the back seat. Ben was up and looking at his book. I smiled at him.
"Let's go get some lunch Benny."
"Lush?"
"Yeah. Lunch." I sighed. I pulled out of the driveway and sped down the road. Today was as ordinary as it could get for me. Now to only keep these two in the back far away from my dad. Knowing him he'd seek to make them like me and looking at Ben he's a perfect candidate. So quiet and brooding. I hope to change that.
