Chapter 1: I am dead inside, and the Universe hates me.

Hi, my name is Jack, and I am your average college dropout. Except that I am not, and I am 90 percent sure that my life is some kind of massive fever dream I am having because I must have killed puppies in my previous life to deserve this.

What is this you might be asking? Let me tell you about the cluster fuck that I call my life. Have you ever seen a fantasy movie where some random ordinary dude gets teleported into a different world and becomes the hero? Yeah, I have that every god dam week except that I get transported into different worlds and must solve some kind of problem. But that's amazing you might be thinking. No. It is most certainly not. Let me tell you why. This is not a movie in which I am the protagonist. I do not get help in these scenarios and I do not have the luck a protagonist has with timing or any of that stuff. What makes this "ability", in my opinion its more like a curse because I can't control where or when I go to these worlds, even worse Is that everything is so god dam terrifying. I mean a dragon is pretty cool and all just not when it is trying to kill you. After the first few times of getting teleported, I have realized I can bring things with me. Which is the exact reason I have always a backpack on me filled with various foods drinks and items I might need to survive these hell worlds. The thing I absolutely always carry on my person is my Fn five seven. Why might you ask? About 80 percent of the times, I get transported into some kind of middle ages Universe. Which means there is usually some monster I need to kill, and a gun obviously makes this quite a bit easier. Do you know how hard it is to kill a so called "Devil Scorpion" with a sword? Very, it is very god dam hard to do. Trust me I am the one person that actually knows.

Now you might be wondering what it looks like when I get transported to these fantasy worlds. It is a quite simple process since I just more or less appear there immediately. No fancy portal or effects which is kind of boring not gonna lie. Once I arrive in these scenarios there is this little pop-up thing that comes up, like in video games, that tells me what I need to do and once I have read what it says the thing just disappears. As I have already mentioned most of the time, I need to kill a monster or some kind of tyrant but sometimes these quests are… different. What do I mean by that you might be asking yourself? Let me give you an example. One time I got transported into your typical fantasy world and I expected I need to kill some sort of beast that is causing problems. But when I read the quest, I was surprised to say the least. It said end the peoples suffering. After wandering around I found out there were four tribes with about ten members each. Everyone was suffering from extreme malnutrition. So of course, I thought I need to help them with food maybe show them how to hunt or fish. In the end I decide I would show them how to fish with the fishing rod I brought with me in case I run out of food. After helping them with that I thought I would be done but then I found out that they are all incredibly sick. According to them it was a hereditary sickness that the have had for years. The problem was no one knew a cure and neither did I. This sickness causes extreme nausea and pain in the entire body and that was the moment I remembered the quest: End the peoples suffering. I told myself that there was no way this could be the quest, but I realised this is not a game, this is not a movie in which I am the protagonist. There is not always going to be a happy ending for me or the people of the world I get brought into.

I though about this for hours until one of the tribe members came to me. He was the one that saw me use my gun against a wolf. He didn't know how it worked or what it was, but he knew It could kill someone immediately. I am sure most of you can already guess what he was going to ask me.

"Please! Pleas just do it! We can't… we can't endure this anymore! Not this pain! Not this life!"

He pleaded with me with tears in his eyes. I didn't know what to say. Did I really have the right to kill forty people? Was it okay if they wanted me to do it? I thought about it for a good hour before I told myself that it is for the better. They were suffering and there was no end to it but me. I keep telling myself that I did the right thing. That There was no other way. It kept me up at night for a long time until things like this happened again and again and again. It was never the same scenario, but It always led to the same things me killing someone I didn't want to. Me killing someone who didn't deserve it. Or I was the one that caused the death of an innocent person because I didn't think things through properly. All these things haunt me to this day. I regret every single one of these actions I had to take. Had to?

A sad smile formed on my face as I thought about various scenarios with these kinds of endings.

Maybe I did. Maybe there was another way. Not that it matters right now. I did what I did, and I cannot change it. Do you see now why I call this a curse?

As much as I hate to admit this, this curse has its benefits. But Jack, I hear you ask, what might these benefits be? Well remember when I told you about how I call these scenarios quests? In video games you usually get a reward after completing a quest. One time a got a pretty cool sword that I have hanging in my apartment. One time I got a stack of dollar bills. I never know what the reward will be but usually it is something I need.

"I should really stop thinking about this as if it were a movie." I say to none in particular.

I answer myself with a sigh "Yeah, I really should."

I smile "But I won't. It's kinda fun."

This must be one of these coping mechanisms I have developed to deal with this shit. I think to myself. Oh well It's late already so I guess I should go to sleep now.

I walk towards my bed and lie down. Ah these new soft pillows were worth it, The grassy texture. Grassy texture?

I open my eyes.

"Oh, you have to be fucking kidding me!"
