'Were foreigners not allowed here or were only the verified ones allowed to enter the land?' was the question that penetrated through my head.

I didn't know if I should look at him and accept the offer. I could already feel how much trouble he would get into for making a home for a foreigner if he got caught.

"Kind sir, would it not be better for you to not involve yourself with me and land in trouble?" I asked as I looked at his short, stout stature. "Your business would be shut down and you would not have a morsel to feed your family, lest they imprisoned you."

"Tell me your name first, little one," he said as he gently pushed me down on a chair. "I am Rafferty Grant. And if you must know, I have not made a family in the past twenty-five years of my life. I have passed my prime and would like to live it in peace. The only heirs to my place are my nephews and nieces, who visit once in a while."
