"What are you back here for, Lady Lilith?" I heard the king say through the doors, despite the large distance. My hearing was getting better each day and it was frightening me that I could hear things I didn't want to eavesdrop on. But more than that, I was somehow easily able to slip past the shields of both of us.

"I did as you ordered, Your Majesty," said the lady with the prettily carved face with a bow of her head.

"As I ordered? When did I ever ask for anything from anyone when I could seize it myself if I wished?"

"You had told me that I didn't know the real hardships in life and told me to be a maid at the palace."

He snickered so loudly that both the disguised maid and I recoiled. The sound echoed off the walls and my head, making it seem more disturbing than his already dark aura.
