Chapter 20

His head touched my knees, and it constricted my chest because I could not believe that the wealthiest man in the world was kneeling before Debby Odion.

"I am sorry for throwing you into all this without forewarning. I wanted to tell you when we met, but I did not know how. I wanted to tell you after I left, but it never was the right time. I did not want to scare you away."

"I am sorry, but whatever this is, it is dead on arrival. I cannot handle another rich boy drama in my life. It is glamorous as fuck to hang with a rich guy until you get on their unpleasant side, and you will realize what power means. I am sorry, but I have been there and still suffering the consequences."

"You are judging me again, Debs… You believed I was a catfish before we met, and here you go, judging me based on the material things I own. I know I am asking for a lot of trusts this fast, but I like you and would hate for my wealth to come between us."

"It is not your wealth that I fear. It is the power you wield. I am where I am today because I underestimated affluence. I cannot go home because of the damage he did to my family. I am nursing my child alone, and I may have to hide forever because I fear he may wake up one day and take my child away from me, and I would have no power to stop him. I live in terror of him, Samuel, and his affluence is nothing compared to yours. I will not allow another man to destroy me. I will not let you break me."

"I am not your ex, Debby. Our story is still unwritten. Give us the chance to write it without the ink of the past. Judging me by his character is not fair."

Part of me wants him so badly, and part of me wants to quit while I can. I mean, he is hard to resist, and he is begging on his knees for me to give him a chance.

What if I quit and miss the only person who would ever love and accept my daughter? Would I not regret my decision If I reject him?

Take away the wealth, and he is still the same Samuel who came to my house. Yes, he may be a little different now, but he seems to be the person I cried on his shoulder days ago.

"Please, give me a chance to prove myself to you. You did that when we met, and I believe you can do it again. Debby, I am still your friend. Please look at me the same way you had been. Treat me the same, and talk to me the same way. By the end of the day, I will let you walk away if this is too much for you. But please give it a chance, please."

"Why me? Why do you want me here? I have nothing to offer in such a friendship."

"Because you are my friend, and you don't need to offer me anything but your friendship. You will not regret this. I promise you."

"I hope so. I truly hope so."

"I assure you we will be fine."

"Ok. Let's see where this goes. I will give it a chance. I am not sure about all this. It is crazy, but I will try."

I answered him, and relief washed over his gorgeous face."

"Thank you." He smiled and took my hand. "Come on, let me give you a tour of the house."
