Chapter 44

"Morning, Debs."

I opened my eyes to two beautiful blue-grey orbs starring into my brown ones. His warm hand pushed my mountain of curls off my face, and I leaned into the warmth of his palms.

"Morning, Sam."

I drowsily answered and inhaled his familiar scent. His lips came down on mine for a short but sweet kiss.

I can get used to this.

"I am off to work. I will also be home very late, so do not wait up."

I pulled myself up and leaned against the headboard.

"What time is it?"

"5 am."

"You sleep so late and wake up very early."

"I am sorry for waking you. I do not want to leave without informing you."

"That is OK, babe. I am glad you did."

He stood up from where he was sitting by my side, and I could see he was dressed in a well-tailored suit and wielding a briefcase.

Damn.

It is too early to drool, Debby.

"Take it easy at work today."

"I will."

He bent and hugged me, placing a kiss on my cheek before leaving. I could tell that it would be a pretty tough day for him, so I could not help but worry.

I did not hear from him for the rest of the day, so I spent all that sketching a new collection. The plan all along was for me to resume fashion designing when Sam turns a year old, and I was heavy on the hard work because it kept me busy and off my phone.

I woke up in the morning, and he was sleeping beside me. I took his buzzing phone from the nightstand and picked it up.

"Good morning, sir? What is your ETA? Your meeting with Leland furniture is in twenty minutes."

"Hm… hm. This is Miss Debby Odion speaking. I am afraid Samuel cannot come to work today. He is down with severe anaemia because of exhaustion, and the doctor recommends a day off. Can things run smoothly without him for just one day, please?"

"Um… yes, ma'am."

"Thank you. Please redirect his calls for the day, or he will be tempted to rush back to work, and we both know he needs this rest."

"Yes, ma. I will handle things for now. Good day."

Gutsy? I know and hope this does not backfire.

I got little Sam from her nursery because I did not want her to wake up and force him awake with her cry. I covered Samuel properly and picked all his buzzing phones from the table before we proceeded to the dining hall.

Chef Ross already served a lavish breakfast covering the whole table, so we helped ourselves to it and plopped before the television to watch Shrek… again.

I was singing along to the ending soundtrack. The part where Donkey tilts his head up and shouts *I'm in loveeeeee* when I felt a kiss on my hair, and his fresh scent invaded my nostrils.

"Good afternoon, superstar." He rubbed my shoulders with amusement in his eyes. "And you do not have to shout it to the entire world. I already know that you are in love with me."

I elbowed him hard.

"I was professing my love for prince charming. Not you."

"That hurts. That hurts. I thought I was your prince charming." He chuckled and picked up his phones from the couch. "I think I overslept. I rarely do that. Also, I am sorry that my buzzing phones woke you up, judging because you have them with you."

He lifted little Sam from my thighs into his arms and walked towards the dining table as they served lunch, so I followed suit. He played with her while he ate. And looking at both of them, I could see why people would think they were father and daughter. Hell, if I were not so sure myself, I would believe he is her father too.

"How did things go at…"

A message beeped on my phone, and my mood took a nosedive as I read.

Asshole: Kudos for a job well done. You are proving to be more effective than I thought. Maybe it is time to up the scales and see if you can deliver. You are turning out to be my favourite person in the entire world. Keep your fingers crossed, sister-in-law.
