The Journey Of Samkelisiwe Nzama

I was back home in Vryheid, my mother’s home land. My mom was born and breed in that town. I had to come visit my grandmother or rather see her, after five years of being not around her. We usually would swap. The first year would go to my dads’ side of Kwa -Zulu-Natal and the following we would be at my mother side. The pattern got mixed up that we ended up visiting my dads’ side more that my mother. Culture was too demanding in my dad’s side.

I would not say that my grandmother was an alcoholic but she did love her beer. When I was doing my matric, she got admitted to hospital due to a lot of alcohol intake. My mother had to take a leave from work and go all the way to kwa Zulu natal and look after her. But as for my grandmother despite everything she went through and she was told to leave alcohol, she did not.
