Overlooked Detail of the Past I

It's nearly sunset when Seraphine and Clement began treading their way out of the forest and back to the orphanage.

Since she started putting her distance from most people, she would often spend time exploring the woods near the house and roaming around. She does this whenever playtime comes – for the obvious reason that she is too old to play with the other children, that is. It's a good thing that they don't find her efforts to isolate herself as something strange enough to earn the adults' concern.

Clement decided to accompany Seraphine most of the time, and with that, they have grown closer than ever before.

'Well, I did try to shove him away by giving him the cold shoulders and all. But apart from the fact that he was a tough nut, I also started to feel awful for doing that to such a kind-hearted person…' she mused quietly as she stole a glance at him.

'I don't really mind interacting others. I'll just have to make sure that I'm not going to get attached. Besides, I'm certain that he'll eventually get tired of me. We barely even talk, after all. Kids like him will soon find me boring.'

While she stares at him through the corners of her eyes, he only continues walking beside her in silence, bathing in the soothing serenity of the forest.

A cool gust of wind keeps billowing all around them, matching the rhythm of the swaying branches. Surrounding them at the moment is a festive plethora of dancing flowers, which provides them quite a resplendent sight.

For a while, everything is of peace and calm. Nothing seems out of place.

That's all until Clement halted on his tracks out of nowhere, making Seraphine do the same.

Before she could ask what was wrong, she suddenly spotted a wooden carriage stopping at the road ahead of them. Its uncalled-for appearance took her aback, especially when two shady-looking men with burly statures stepped out of it. Judging by their dark apparels, they seemed to be too enigmatic to be considered as mere merchants.

Not to mention, they reek of nothing but bad news, considering how they appear to be approaching both of them with those sketchy, scheming looks on their faces.

"Clement, I think we shouldn't proceed…" Seraphine told her companion with a wary expression.

"Let's go look for another path-"

Right then, though, she abruptly came to a pause.

Her eyes widen in nonplus as soon as they catch sight of Clement's steely expression. His gaze is narrowed while his mouth is forming a thin line. There's also this forbidding air around him that she never saw before. It both flummoxes and unnerves her, sending shivers running down her spine for a second.

"Clement, what's wrong?"

He did not respond.

At this point in her three lifetimes, she is already used to dangerous situations. That's why she can sense a looming portent whenever there is one. Right now, there is indeed one.

Seraphine then took a moment to scrutinize Clement more closely.

She pores over his features as if looking for any consequential detail that she has overlooked before. It's kind of unsettling when she does so. For some reason, a dreadful feeling is beginning to pool in the pit of her stomach – a premonition.

That's until the puzzle pieces in her head suddenly put themselves together.
