"What surprise?" Eve asked with a bored look on her pretty face. For tonight, Eve was wearing a beautiful long and ivory evening dress with layers of French lace. It bared her slender arms and shoulders and gave the alluring vision of a princess.
Mrs Tang seemed to be accustomed to Eve's lack of enthusiasm, even if she was slightly displeased by it, she did not show on her immaculately made-up face. Mrs Tang smiled mysteriously, "you'll just have to wait and see."
Eve made a face. She hated waiting. What was the point of getting someone's hopes up and then only to tell them that they would have to wait?
"Eve!" A tall and slim girl in a beautiful red dress floated over. "Hello, Auntie," she nodded politely to Mrs Tang.
"Hello, Caitlin." Mrs Tang said.
"Auntie you are looking out of this world beautiful today." Caitlin praised from the bottom of her heart, beaming widely at Mrs Tang.
Mrs Tang smiled gracefully. The girl was always full of compliments. "Thank you. You're looking beautiful too dear."
Then leaning in against Eve's ear Caitlin whispered, "Jin is here!"
Eve opened her eyes wide, and two red blushes suddenly appeared on her pretty little face, and she grabbed Caitlin's arm in excitement, starting to drag her away eagerly.
"Auntie, Eve and I will go and say 'hello' to some friends first." Caitlin quickly turned to Mrs Tang and explained before running off with Eve.
"Go ahead, have fun." Mrs Tang smiled and watched the two of them hook around each other's arms and giggling away in delight.
"How does my make-up look? Eve suddenly halted in her tracks and asked worriedly. " Is my eyeshadow smudged? "
Caitlin took a closer look and shook her head, "you're all good, it looks perfect." She gave her a thumbs up sign.
Eve grinned, showing off her perfectly aligned white teeth. She was so happy to hear Jin's here, she couldn't wait to see him and show off her brand new dress. The French lace used were the same ones used for the Duchess of Cambridge when she married Prince William.
Only the best of the best was good enough for her! And Jin was the only guy that was good enough for her. Then in satisfaction, Eve blew Caitlin a kiss in the air, which Caitlin returned before the two of them burst into fits of giggles.
Mr Guo had been in the catering industry for more than 20 years. He ran a successful chain of restaurants all over the world, and one of them was one of the few restaurants that earned 3 Michelin stars.
Normally, he was so busy with the management of his restaurants he rarely participated in birthday banquets of the offsprings of the rich and famous.
At most he would send a few of his apprentices to do the cooking. After all, there were so many apprentices under him, all perfectly capable and highly skilled, so he didn't need to go out in person.
But the Tang family were one of the largest shareholders of his company and were the largest landowners on which his restaurants were built. He had insisted on personally taking care of the banquet on this occasion.
And after several careful discussions, they had settled on the menu of a fusion of East meets West cuisine. Plenty of canapés to start with then a mixture of bite-sized, mini hamburgers and kebab skewers, finished off with colourful desserts and a ten tiered birthday cake that were made up of chocolate, pink velvet, lemon and earl grey.
He scanned the table of dazzling, colourful food, and nodded to the apprentices with satisfaction. The fragrance was overflowing, it was impressive, he and his team have outdone themselves again. Yes, he still lived up to expectations.
Lifting his head up, he saw a girl in a yellow dress walking around the buffet table with her brows tightly knitted together. She held a small empty plate in one hand as her large almond eyes roamed around in uncertainty.
What? No porridge?! Sefi thought to herself. She had gotten that used to having porridge, it seemed rather inappropriate when there wasn't any. She had no idea what to have now. Was she allowed to eat anything else for that matter?
She had trudged over to the buffet table as soon as that mishap with Mrs Tang happened. To say her ego wasn't bruised by it was a lie. No one liked to be treated like they were invisible. But she couldn't exactly shout and scream and demand for people to take notice of her, could she?
In the end, she settled on three small pieces of chocolate cake before going off to find somewhere to sit and eat her cake in peace.
Her strange choice left Mr Guo and his team of staff bewildered and confused. Was that all she was having? Why did all the pretty girls eat so little food? They're like tiny birds. And why do they have such weird taste these days?
Sefi found a quiet spot away from the crowded tent and the stage where a live band was playing. She placed the plate on her lap, using a small fork she took a little mouthful of the chocolate cake and slowly delivered it to her lips.
The smell of chocolate was incredible, one bite and she felt like she had died and gone to heaven. It tasted so amazing, she almost started crying. This was one decent chocolate cake.
"Miss Sefi?" A girl dressed in a servant's uniform appeared in front of Sefi, carrying a tray full of glasses of champagne. "Mrs Tang has asked if you could take these to her."
Sefi glanced up in surprise, uncertain if she had heard the girl correctly. Mrs Tang wanted her to deliver the champagne? When she had about over a hundred members of staff running around the place, she wanted her?
It seemed very strange. But then again, just like many rich people, the Tangs were strange.
