At that time what the shrieker show was an old ship chart, the chart which show an anomaly of space where no star was found anymore at one point in a part of space. The thing that makes the ship chart so interesting that they do an inverse chart of the original flight and also find the anomaly again, they believe that the universe is round in facts. The anomaly on the inverted chart was closer then the original flight path, so they are planning to build this project to reach it.
