Chapter 39: Mac

"I understand."

I muttered the words quietly and rubbed the back of my neck in aggravation. I hung up the call and swore long and loud.

Whenever my phone rang or I got a text message over the last few days, it seemed like the news on the other end got worse and worse.

Someone had tried to kill my father.

Not that that was an uncommon occurrence in itself, but this time the hit had come from someone on the inside, which meant my father's organization had a rat. It also said that my location at Castle Pines was no longer the secret it had once been, and my father wanted me to leave.

He wanted to surround me with security and move me back into the protection of the family, even though it didn't sound like a very safe place to be, if you asked me.
