A king ruled in a kingdom called Ushinagar. The name of that king was Shivi. He was a Chakravarti emperor and was famous for his greatness and kindness. It was said of his kindness that no one returned empty-handed from his court. He is always ready to help everyone. Even if he has to make any kind of sacrifice for him. This was the reason that the discussions of his kindness reached beyond the earth and reached heaven.
When Indra, the King of the Gods, came to know about this, he made up his mind that he would test King Shivi himself and make sure whether King Shivi was really so kind or that he was just a hypocrite. He decided to make a plan and requested Agni Dev to join the scheme with him. Agni Dev also agreed to take the test of King Shiva on King Indra's talk.
Then what was it that King Indra took the form of an eagle and Agni Dev took a pigeon. The two kings went to the court of Shiva. Agnidev went forward as a pigeon and followed him as an eagle as if an eagle was flying behind him to hunt the pigeon.
Shortly thereafter, Agnidev in the form of a pigeon reached the court of King Shivi and sat on King Shivi's thigh. He told the king that an eagle is coming back to hunt him, save his life. Hearing this pigeon thing, the king said- 'Don't worry at all. That hawk won't spoil you while I am. I promise to protect you. '
As soon as the king gave the promise, Indra Dev also reached Shiva's court as an eagle. He told King Shivi that that pigeon is my prey. By killing him, he will satisfy his and his children's hunger.
On the eagle, the king said- 'I have promised this pigeon that I will protect its life. Therefore, I cannot give it to you. '
Hearing this, the king said, "If you do not give it to me, then my children and I will be hungry for lack of food." So, you have to give it.
Hearing this eclipse of the eagle, King Shivi got thinking for a while and started thinking about it. After thinking for some time, King Shiva said to the eagle - 'If I give you meat equal to the weight of this pigeon, then the hunger of you and your children will be eradicated. In such a situation, the life of this pigeon will also be saved and my word will also remain. '
Indra Dev, who came in the form of an eagle, agreed to the king, but he placed a condition in front of the king. The eagle said- "I am ready, Maharaj, but you have to give the flesh of the weight of the pigeon to your body."
Hearing this eagle, the king thought how much the pigeon would weigh. If I give meat equal to its weight from my body, then the life of this pigeon will be saved. Thinking this, the king ordered one of his courtiers to bring a scale.
Scales were brought to the court. The king placed the pigeon on one pan of the scales and cut a piece from his thigh with a knife and placed it on the other pan of the scales, but the scales did not move at all. Seeing this, the king cut another piece and placed it on the scales. Even after that the piece of meat was much less than the weight of the pigeon.
They slowly removed half of their flesh and put it on the scales, even then the weight of the flesh remained less than the weight of the pigeon. Seeing this, King Shivi was very disappointed. He decides that whatever happens now, he will save the pigeon, keeping his promise.
Thinking of this, he himself sat on the scales and the pigeon pan on the scales came up. The king said to the eagle - 'You take the flesh of my whole body and release the pigeon.'
Hearing this, Indra Dev felt pity on the king. Indra and Agnidev came in their true form and said- 'King Shivi, we came to test you and you were successful in this test. You are really very kind and benevolent. No one else can match you on this earth. "Saying this, both the gods disappeared from there.
