Chapter 1

The class was math, and it was going in a steady pace. Everyone was working hard on their papers. I had finished my paper, and asked the teacher, Mr. Philip, if I could go to the library and read. He allowed me, but he said I had to take the hall pass and expected me back before the bell.

"No problem, sir. I'll be back after I find an enjoyable book to read", I said.

I got up from my desk, walked over to the teacher's desk and grabbed the hall pass. Heading toward the door I looked at the clock.

Noon.

Walking down the hall, I noticed how dark it was, but I assumed it was a storm. The library was empty. The only other person in the library, besides me, was the librarian. I walked in and said hello.

She asked me," What can I do for you?"

"I'm looking for a suspenseful book, like a mystery or a post-apocalyptic book. Do you have any?" I asked. "Let me see". She went to the back and looked for a specific book. A smile crossed her face when she found it. The smile was not horrific or anything, but it still gave me shivers. She walked back to me and handed me the book.

"It's one of my favorite books to read", she said in a kind cheerful voice.

"Thank you", I said, "I'll read a little bit in here". "Go ahead but take your time it is a very detailed book."

I headed over to a chair beside a big window. The window was 4'by6". The book was a black paper back and the title was "The Turned."

I read a few chapters of the book before my eyes got heavy. Eventually I fell asleep. The dream was vague, but I understood it very well. It was about the end of the world being ravaged by monsters and cults. I was in the middle of the chaos. Fighting. Running. Doing anything to survive.

Suddenly I woke up in a sweat from the dream. I looked at the book and chuckled nervously. I checked my watch and felt my heart sink to my feet.

It is 4:30!

I got up away from the table and put the book up on the shelf. Heading out the door I looked outside and gasped. Everybody was outside, in the cold, with nothing on to keep them warm!

I was tempted to open the door, but something told me not to. Trusting my instincts, I went back to the library and grabbed scissors.

Walking down the halls, I felt uneasy, I felt like I was being watched. As I sneaked down the hall, I was acting paranoid and seeing things that were not there. Hearing things that I cannot tell if they are real or not. Finally, I made it to my locker, punched in the combination, opened it, and grabbed my backpack.

After I put on my backpack, I walked to the office and looked for a phone. The desk was cleared of all its contents. The papers were on the floor. There was no phone in all the debris. I checked the other rooms and found nothing.

What happened here? What is going on? Who did this? A new drill?

These questions flooded my mind as I looked for a way to contact my parents. Nothing. It is always nothing. No way to contact. No way to leave. No escape. Why is it always nothing?
