"Unsheath your swords," Chas announced calmly.
The knights and Eugene applauded at the sudden announcement since they knew what was gonna happen and where. The handymen unsheathed their swords, confused but also alarmed. As for the coachman, he stopped the carriage as the horses neigh.
Lawrence took his sword, laying on the passenger seat beside him and proceeded to exit the carriage.
"It seems we have company," the knight in the frontline spoke. "Not just one or two, but many." his voice didn't sound alarmed nor afraid, but more thrilled.
What was there to be scared of? Monsters are practically an everyday challenge for knights and guards. And each day, there would always be a subjugation to purge territories of Monsters.
Lawrence didn't feel an ounce of excitement. To him, unsheathing his sword meant bloodying his blade. On the other hand, if he were to practice instead of using his weapon to slash, it would've excited him.
"Fend them off from the carriage. But leave most of the enemies for the Prince." Chas commanded.
Before they answered, the knights studied Lawrence to seek confirmation.
Lawrence nodded.
"We'll fend them off from the carriages and horses." the knight stated.
Lawrence advanced after the group as Chas followed behind him. Eugene was yawning from boredom and, in hope, anticipated an attacker surrounding them.
'They aren't even much. I wished there were more surrounding us.' Eugene thought.
Among the group, Eugene and Lawrence had faced more devils than the rest. It would only make sense for them to be less excited nor fazed, unlike the knights who dealt with only scraps of the demons themselves or the guards who've never dealt with any types of enemies.
Chas, on the other hand, though, handled numerous outstanding beasts far greater than the monsters.
Lawrence wasn't a bit nervous or thrilled as he walks forward to the group of unknown monsters. Instead, he was cracking his joints to prepare for the battle.
'Let's just get this over with.' He thought.
In a surprise, the monsters up ahead weren't what Lawrence nor the others were to expect.
They weren't monsters they often see up north, where usually they meet Goblins or Trolls, rarely Hobgoblins or Ogres.
These monsters they were about to meet were new species of monsters that recently developed. Bugbears.
They weren't relatives with Ogres, Onis, Trolls, Orcs, Hobgoblins, Goblins, nor Kobolds. They were different species of monsters.
A ferocious monster with a head of a monkey, a slash dog, and a body of a bear. But with a general body structure similar to humans but bulkier.
They wield a club with a metal globe-like edge, surrounded by sharp points. And protected themselves with armour, similar to what humans possess but did not cover their whole bodies.
There were a total of twelve bugbears camping on their site, excluding the ones who were on the lookout. And they were twice as big as Lawrence but only a half bigger than Chas. Nonetheless, the bugbears' core strength wouldn't alarm the two of them.
"What are these fellow?" Lawrence asked, twisting his wrist. Still unbothered.
"Bugbears, I presume," Chas replied. "A half bigger than Orcs but with equal strengths. New identified species that recently widespread all over this district of the Principality.
I faced two or more of them, and they weren't that much of a deal." Chas assured as he sat down on a trunk that laid on the ground.
"If that's the case," Lawrence readied his sword, "They are experimental demons of the new species."
When a new species of demons are made spreads in different districts of the Principality(or other regions), the head demons often sends a weaker version of the fresh devils to test how well they survive on the lands of humans. Nicknaming those 'tests' as experimental demons.
And in just a blink of a moment, the twelve bugbears were annihilated by Lawrence. Each unable to stop or counter any of his attacks.
It was only possible due to Lawrence's experience in terms of silent killing(assassinations). His speed, precision, and strength allowed him to strike the common vital points of beings like bugbears by striking them neck-to-neck before they could even retaliate.
It wasn't a battle but a massacre. And it placed a displeased look on Chas's face.
Although Lawrence did his job proficiently, he didn't show enough to fully validate his skills to Chas.
For Lawrence, living as a prince in an isolated land, doing things in moderation served no purpose. Only because there were other kids like him to shown unpredictable actions and achievements and were indicated commonly.
Because prodigies weren't surprises anymore. And the existence of Geniuses is universally known.
Despite Chas disliking Lawrence's attitude in his 'hunting' skills, he couldn't dispute his precise movements.
He moved like the movement of the river water, smooth like a snake. But deadly as a serpent.
"That's that," Chas remarked.
Lawrence wiped the blood on his cheek and frowned at his dirty figure. He knew cutting their necks would be a mess, but he didn't want to prolong a useless battle when he only wanted to go back in his carriage and continue to read the books he brought.
Eugene approached Lawrence drenched in blood and gave him a cloth to clean himself.
"Guess we'll have to go to a river or lake to clean you up.
"Jeez, these things are disgustingly foul." Eugene pinched his nose and walked back towards their carriage.
"There's a bugbear child on the bush to your right if you haven't noticed." Lawrence plainly announced, loud enough for only Eugene to hear.
"I'm not that ruthless to kill an experimental demon child just because his parents killed several humans," Eugene replied, continuing to advance back in the group.
"And here I thought you were getting rusty," Lawrence inwardly spoke to himself.
And just like a ruthless hunter would do, he approached the bush and slashed it into two despite unable to see the bugbear child. Nonetheless, he was right.
Lawrence used the cloth in his hands and wiped the blood on his blade.
