"Come on Miayana, chin up." Robyn instructed, putting up her hands in defense.
We are currently training at our own private gym, courtesy of Robyn's dad. Being the only daughter, and the youngest child of a well off bank manager. She is entitled to get anything she desire, which is this apartment and gym. Where we come to meditate and train. I have been engulf in the whole hero stuff for a month now, and I must say. I really enjoy it. News of my heroic deeds have been spreading like wild fires, at the end of every save or rescue. Reporters topple over themselves to get a interview from me, but me being me. I don't care about the fame, I just want to put my power to good use.
"Come on Miayana, focus!" Robyn snap her fingers in front of my face to get my attention.
"Oh, sorry. I was just thinking about how in the space of one month, my life had made a big turn. Never in my life, did I picture myself to be a superhero. Things like this doesn't happen in the real world." I explain to her, a big smile on my face.
"You don't have to have powers to be a superhero, but I am really glad I get to be apart of it." She pulls me in a tight hug. "Now, let's get back to training.
It's Monday, and I am on my way to the university campus. When I feel like someone is watching me, I have been getting these weird feelings from the night I save Johnson from that guy Rossco. I have told Robyn about it, and she said it might be because of the whole secret identity thing. She said that I am just paranoid, and I believe her. But now I just can't shake the feeling away. I turn around to see if anyone was behind me, but there wasn't. I started to look in other directions but I still didn't see anyone. I started to concentrate, opening my mind to see if I can pick up on any unusual thoughts. Oh, did I mentioned that I can control my mind reading abilities? Well if I didn't, I am saying it now. All that meditation and training really helped me, and I have Robyn to thank for that. Back to the situation at hand, I couldn't pick up on any abnormal thought. Everything was just quiet.
'Calm down Mia, you are just being paranoid. There is nothing to worry about, you are safe.' I reassure myself. I took a deep breath, and then I continue on my way to the university campus.
"Hey her...M-Mia." Robyn caught herself. She has this tendency to call me hero when no one is around, but slip up sometimes when we are in public.
"Sup Robyn." I greeted her back, while taking a seat next to her.
"So, did any saving this morning before you got here?" She lean over and whisper to me.
"No." I whisper back just as the graphic arts professor walks in.
It is now fifteen minutes after two, and the end of my final class. I hurriedly gather my stuff, and quickly maneuvered around the bustle of other uni student either going to their next lecture, or on their way home like me.
"Miayana, over here!" Robyn shouted from the student parking lot, she is standing next to her brand new Porsche. That she also manipulate her father into buying her, when she ask for the apartment and gym.
I briskly walk over to her, can't wait to get home and pet my animals before I start my first night, patrolling the city.
"I have a surprise for you when we get to your apartment." Robyn said to me when i reach up to her.
"Oh come on just tell me, you know I hate surprises." I whined with a pout.
"Nope, no telly." Robyn laugh, as she press a button on her car keys. Disabling the car alarm.
I walk around to the passenger side of the car, and open the door. As we are about to go in, we hear a familiar voice calling out Robyn's name.
Robyn and I turn and look in the direction of the person calling, and we saw our four other friends. Or should I say Robyn's four other friends, Myra, Lillian, Macy and Roxanne, coming towards us.
"Hey guys, what's up?" Robyn greeted them with a polite smile, but from her thoughts, I guess she isn't so happy to see them. 'Ugh, what do you all want know? I have important things to get to right about now.' She mental rolled her eyes.
"We haven't hang out with you like....forever, and we just wanted to invite you and....Miayana," Lillian pause before calling my name, smiling over at me. But it didn't reach her eyes. "To go to the mall with us. And then we can go-"
"Sorry, but Miayana and I are busy." Robyn interrupt her.
"Oh." She said, sounding defeated. "Maybe next time then." She tried to smile, but her mouth wouldn't comply.
She should cool with what Robyn had said, but with a VIP pass into her thoughts. I heard her true intentions.
'Why is she choosing that loser over us? What is so special about Miayana? The only reason I tolerate her, is because of Robyn's sake.'
So that's what she really think about me, I know it. Let me see what the other three fakers are thinking.
'Omg! What is she wearing. Floral pink knee length dresses are so last year.' Was Myra's thought. I can't believe she is criticizing my outfit, but what can I say. I guess she pass one of the stereotypes people say about blondes.
'I am glad that Robyn is spending time with Miayana, she seems more out going now. But would it kill Rob to give her other, better friends, the time of day.' That was Macy's thought, it was sappy at first but those last fifteen words. Ruined it. And i always admired her beauty. She has Carmel skin, with curly black hair. And chocolate brown eyes.
Next and last thought belongs to Roxanne, let's see what the only snobby badass in the group thinks about me. 'Serve Lillian right, for all the nasty things she has been saying about Miayana for the last three years.' Roxanne is actually cool with me, aww Roxy. 'But I don't care anyways, not of these girl matters to me. It's just nice to have a popular posses to hang with.' Oh Roxy, you cold hearted girl.
Robyn and I hop into the car, after waving goodbye to the girls. They all had smiles on their faces, but once the car started to drive away. I sneak a glance back, and all the warm smiles were gone. Replace with scowls and glares instead. It was nice to finally prove my theories right, the only friend I have in this group is Robyn.
"What are you-"
"Hey Rob, can I tell you something?" I interrupt what ever she was going to say to me.
"Sure." She answer, looking over at me, then back on the road.
"So I kinda, purposely read the girls minds. And they had some really nas-"
"You did what! Why would you do something like that Miayana?"
"I only did it to find out what they really thing of me, I always had this gut urging feeling that the didn't like me hang around with you guys. And I prove that feeling right, they had some pretty nasty opinions of me." I sigh, and look out the window.
'Always have a feeling that they didn't like you either, even after Lillian ask me to not invite you to my slumber party last year.' I over hear Robyn's thought.
"I can't believe you Robyn, you knew that the didn't like me. And you still force me to hang around with them." I blurted out.
"You read my mind." She ask, a fearful look, along with regret and guilt. Clouded her face.
"Yes, I read you mind!" I snap angrily at her, she flinch from my sudden out burst.
"Look, I am sorry ok. But I didn't care, and I still don't care what they think about you. You are my best friend, and that will never change. Oh, and remember that I know your secret." She laugh trying to lighten the mood. "Are you still mad at me?" She ask when she didn't see me smile.
I ponder her question for a minute, before and shake my head with a smile.
"Good, because I don't want you to ruin my surprise with that pouty face of yours." She laugh, and I roll my eyes at her.
Finally home, I drop my keys in the bowl on the table next to the door. Throwing my satchel on the couch, I called out to Pug and Molly. And the came scampering from my bedroom.
"Oh my babies, I missed you two so much." I cuddled them on my polished hard wood floor.
'Mia's home.' They cheered, Pug licking my face and Molly purring softly while I scratch behind her ears.
Mia, look." Robyn voice said from behind me.
I got up from off the floor, placing my fur babies on the couch. Then I turn to her. She has a black box in her hand, and a huge smile plaster on her face.
"What's in it?" I ask, but she said she isn't telling me. It would ruin the surprise, so I try reading her mind. But she kept chanting makeup brands in her head.
"Come on, take the box and see what is inside." She shifted from one foot to the next impatiently.
I narrow my eyes at her suspiously, before gingerly taking the box out of her hands, and placing it on the coffee table. Removing the lid from the box, I parted the grey stuffing paper. To find black leather neatly folded inside the box.
"What is this?" I ask, looking up at Robyn. who had a smile so huge, she puts the Joker to shame.
"Just take it out and see for yourself." Was the only answer I got.
I carefully dip my hands inside the box and took out the silky leather fabric content. Unfolding the garment, and holding it up in the air reveling a black spandex. With dark purple tight sleeves, and a dark purple stripe going down each sides. At the waist has two dark purple stripes, starting at the back and join togather in the middle. At the bottom of her stomach area. I put down the costume and turn to look questionably at Robyn.
"Do you like it?" She ask hopefully.
"No, my question first. When did you find time to do this?" I gesture to the costume on the coffee table.
"I have been working on it for about two weeks now, after you suddenly came up with your superhero name. Look, it even has the lower case I with a tiny brain as the dot, to represent the name Insight. So do you like it? Please tell me if you like it, cause if you don-"
"Robyn, stop blabbering. Of course I like it. And I also like the material, but how?"
Well, I am majoring in fashion design at uni. So it was simple. I went and order the best Italian leather, along with some non flammable fabric. So you don't get caught on fire, and tadda. Your amazing superhero costume."
I could help but pull her in a bone crushing hug, and a big smile spread across my face.
"Go try it on, oh. Don't forget to try on the rest of the suit that is left in the box." Robyn clap her hands in excitement.
About ten minutes later, I am calling Robyn to come inside my room.
"So, what do you think. Do your suit fits me nicely?" I smirk at her, as her mouth drop wide open when she saw me.
"Oh wow, just wow." She place a hand over her heart, and use the other one to fan herself. "Girl, you are smoking. Dude we need to call the fire department up in here." She laugh. "You look amazing."
"I do, don't I." I turn to the full length body mirror behind me, and look at myself from head to toe.
The suit fits nicely, snug on my body. But have room to breathe. The spandex is a all in one, with knee high, two inch heel dark purple boots that matches the sleeves. The dark purple elbow length is a mixture of leather and a nice silky material, it also had a black stripe on each sides.
"Oh, before I forget. Here." She handed me a dark purple domino mask. "You will need this."
I take the mask from her and put it on, and then look at my reflection in the mirror. And I must say, I look like a real hero, gorgeous as ever, with my hair falling down to my waist and over my shoulder to my back.
"Oh thank you so much Robyn, I really got to find a way to repay you for everything you have done for me. I couldn't have ask for a better friend and partner in this whole hero operation." I open my arms, gesturing to her to come and give me a hug. Which she happily oblige to.
"You are my best friend, I would do anything for you." She squeeze me tightly. "Now let's get some food in you, before you go out on patrol."
Five hours after a bellyfull of Mexican food and some much needed rest, I suit up and venture out on my first night of patrol.
"So, how are you feeling?" Robyn ask through the communicator she gave me, before I left my apartment. I guess she came prepared for everything.
"Everything is going a-ok." I said, perch on a rooftop out of sight. As I listen for any unusual thoughts.
"Ok, give me a shout if you need any help."
"Will do, Insight out." I click the communicator of with a laugh. Now let's get back to patrolling.
Nothing unusual happened, but I still sat up on the rooftop just in case. A few minutes had passed, when I suddenly get the feeling that I am being watched. I turn around to the entrance of the rooftop, but I didn't see anyone.
'Get a grip on yourself girl, you are just paranoid. Being out this late, alone. It's all just in your head.' I think to myself.
I turn back to face the streets, when I hear a scraping noise behind me. I jump to my feet, getting into a defensive stand. My fist double outward in the air, getting ready to defend myself.
"How is out there, show yourself?!" I shouted, but didn't receive an answer. And the worse part, I can't get a reading on their mind. I never felt so defenseless since i got my power, I started to rely on my mind reading skills to help me out. "Don't be a coward and show yourself!" I yell again. My heart pounding in my chest as I hear footsteps approaching me from the darkness. My fists tighten, and sweat forms on my forehead. As the footsteps approach even close.
'Come on, come on.' I chanted in my head. As the figure approach, I can make out the silhouette of the person. Before a cat meowed in the alley next to building I am on, I got startled by the cry and turn to face the alley. And when I look back at the entrance, the silhouette is gone.
"Ugh, Insight. You never take your eyes of the Villian, never get distracted." I scold myself angrily.
With a frustrated sigh, I tap the wrist on my left hand gloves. To activate the built in watch, and check the time.
"It's 3:34am." I mutter to myself. Might as well head home, and get some rest. I have three courses to attend at day break, one starts exactly at 7:00am.
"Help! Help!" The nurse screamed, as the mask man chase her down an empty street between third and fourth downtown Highland street.
Oh man, I can't catch a break. I was on my way to school, when I heard this intense wailing in my head. Now, I am chasing this mask guy from hurting this nurse. I guess a hero's work is never done.
I did a front flip, landing steadily on two feet in front of the guy. He was startled for a minute, but quickly overcome it. He swing a fist at me, but I dodge it. Grabbing his hand instead, and knee him where the sun doesn't shine. He yelp in pain, as he clutch his balls.
'I am going to kill you for this?' He thought angrily.
"Bring it on freak!" I challenge him.
He run at me like a bull coming at a matador in the heart of a heated bull fight match. Nose flaring and all. He try getting a hold at me, but I duck. And he grab air instead.
I slide under his legs, kicking him in the same area again.
"You!" He shouted.
"Me." I taunt him. "Come on gorilla, take of that mask and show me your face like a real man.
He angrily pull the mask off his face, reveling his true identity. His shaggy sandy hair tousled from the mask being pulled off, his icy blue eyes glare at me. And his thin pink lips curl in a snarl. But that's not what caught my attention, oh no. It is the long slash that scar from over his right eye to his left cheek.
"What are you staring at, nuisance!" He roared. He came at me again, but this time. I do a spin kick, hitting his broad nose with the heel of my right boot. Hearing a crunch, and when I look back at him. He was holding his nose, blood running from it, as he crouch down in pain.
'Damn you!' He scream in pain in my head.
"Byran, I already told you we are over!" A woman shouted, and I realise that it was the nurse. She was watching from a safe distance, and when she saw the guy holding his nose in pain. She started walking up to us.
"Do you know him miss?" I try to disguise my voice, by making it a little deeper.
"Yes, he's my ex-boyfriend. He has been following me around from about three weeks now, after I ended it with him." She explain, holding her hand in pain.
"Did he hurt you?" I took her hand, and saw a purplish blue colour forming on her right wrist.
"Yea, when he tried grabbing me after i left the hospital."
"Well don't wo-" But I didn't get a chance to finish, because I was kicked to the ground so fast and hard. It made my head spin.
I heard a gasp from the nurse. "Byran, no!" She screamed. I look up just in time to see him coming at me with a long piece of metal pipe.
I tried to move but he is too fast and my head still feels a little fuzzy, and also my vision is kind of blurry and I am seeing multiple of him. I close my eyes, cringing. Waiting for the impact, but it never came. I open my eyes, and saw Byran on the ground. A silver dagger lodge in his thigh, and a bruise forming on his forehead in the shape of the same metal pipe he had in his hand.
"Where did that come from?" I ask the nurse, she shakedly pointed up on a rooftop above us.
When I look up, o only saw the quick movement of someone running away.
"Ok, ah. I didn't get your name." I said to the nurse.
She tuck a strand of light brown hair, behind her ears. "It's Emily, Emily Foerster."
"Well Emily, can you please call the police? I have some unfinished business i have to take care of." She nodded frantically, as she took out her phone and call 911. "I am going to go now." I said to her, walking backwards.
"Thank you so much Insight, you really are a hero." Her green eyes gleam with happiness.
"And thank you for being a good citizen." I salute her, before turning away. Running in the direction, I saw the mysterious person went.
When I got to the corner of the building, I saw no one. I tried listening of a thought link to the person, but didn't pick up on anything.
"Who are you?" I mumbled, still Looking around.
"Earth to Insight, where are you?" Robyn's voice startled me from my deep thought.
"I was helping a lady who was getting chase by her ex." I reply to her.
"Go hero, but remember that you are also have a regular life to live. And also that you have a class that starts in fifteen minutes."
Oh crap, I totally forgot that I was on my way to the university.
"Hey, don't worry. I will be there soon. Oh, and R. I have something important to tell you when I get there."
"Ok, but hurry. R out." She said, ending the call.
I tap the watch on my gloves and the time showing 6:45am. Oh gosh, I need to hurry. It's a good thing I am near to the university, I just need somewhere private to get out of my super suit. I spot a convenience store across the street.
"Superman change in a phone booth, and I have to sneaking in the back of a convenience store." I grumble, as I run from the back of the building.
I am running like my life depend on it, well it does. When I bump harshly into someone, knocking him down.
"I am so sorry." I said quickly, just barely getting a glance at him before speeding off down the road.
"You finally made it." Robyn said, as I stop in front of her. Placing my hands on my knees to get my breathing under control.
"Y-yea, intense morning." I painted, standing up right. "I have something to tell you."
"Later, after class ok?" She said, walking off to her lecture hall.
Sitting in my graphic design class, couldn't focus on what the professor is teaching. All that is on my mind, is who is the mysterious person that is following me. And I wonder if they know something about my unexpected ability?
When the professor dismissed us, I was the first one out of the lecture hall. Seeding outside to the quad where I see Robyn waiting on me.
"Hey M-"
"Robyn, someone has been watching me and I don't know who." I said quickly, interrupting her.
"Ok cool cat, take a sec to breathe then you start again."
I inhale and then exhale. "I someone is watching me. They even followed me, when I went out patrolling the city last night. And this morning when I was helping this nurse, the person was there. But the weirdest thing is that, the person saved me this morning." I look at Robyn to get her reaction. She has a curious look on her face, while her left hand stroke her chin. Which means she's in thinking mode. I block my mind from her thoughts to give her some privacy.
"So, maybe the person isn't out to ge...wait, wait. What do you mean by saved you?"
"Yea, the guy caught me of guard. And was going to hit me with a piece of metal pipe. But a dagger got lodge in his thigh." I fill her in on what happen.
"We really need to find out who is this person, and why are they following you."
"How are we going to do that, I try listening out for the person's thought. But always end up with nothing." I told Robyn, a solemn look on her face.
"Ok, here what we will do. The next time you go out and you feel like someone is watching or following you, just call me. Are we clear?" I nodded, and she put a hand around my shoulder. "Good, now let's go get some coffee.
That evening, after coming from the university. I am on my way to meet Robyn at this book store called, Books 'n' us. Where she is buying some book about telepathy. She has left campus a bit earlier than me, only having two classes today.
I felt like someone is following me, turn and look behind me but no one was there. I continue on walking in the direction of the book store, when I hear heavy footsteps behind me. Again I turn around, and no one was there. I quickly fumble around in my satchel, pulling out my phone and hit Robyn's number on speed dial.
"Hello."
"Robyn, I am being followed." I cried in the phone, as I started to run. The footsteps getting louder behind me.
"Where are you know?" Robyn as frantically.
"I am two blocks away from the book store." I told her.
"Ok, try to out smart the person. I am on my way." With that said, she hang up and I put my phone away.
Alright Miayana, let's do this. I run into an alley way, and lean against a wall. Making sure not to make any sound. I didn't hear and see anyone for a second, then I saw a guy in a blue jean jacket, a dark grey hoodie underneath it and matching blue jeans pants run pass the alley way. I ease of the wall, and started to run down the alley, I hear footsteps behind me. And I turn to see the guy now running after me. I see a two way street up ahead, and I brilliant idea pop up in my mind.
I run to the opening on the right, ducking behind the corner of the wall, when the guy followed me and was looking around. I jump out from behind the wall, and did a roundhouse kick. But he block he duck and landed a kick of his own in my stomach. I stumble back a bit, but manage to keep my balance. I tried to get a read from his mind, but end up with nothing. This is so weird, why can't I get a reading. He kick my feet, knocking me off balance and I landed harshly on my butt. I did a flip and landed back on my feet, and did a front kick. But he caught my foot, and twist it and i fall to the ground again.
Ugh, why can't I get a hit. It's like he knows my moves before I do them. Wait, what if he can read my mind too. Fear consume me, and I put a block on my thoughts.
It's not the time to chicken out, I am not going down without a fight. You have got this. I give myself a pep talk.
Getting up of the ground, I did a spin and jab him in the collarbone. That hit him off guard, and I take that as an advantage. Striking another punch, but this time he blocks it. Harshly grabbing and twisting my hand.
I squirm in pain, trying to kick him. But the pain is so excruciating, I couldn't even left my foot.
"Let her go!" Robyn yelled, giving the guy an uppercut. When he turn to look at her.
He fall to the ground and groan in pain.
"Hey, are you ok?" Robyn ask, running up to me and checking my arm.
"Yes, thank you." I thank her.
"No worries, not let's get this guy to talk." We both look down at the guy who's on his side groaning in pain.
"Who are you!" I crouch down and turn the guy on his side.
I gasps, when I saw that he was just a kid. A Asian teenage boy.
"I said who are you?" I ask Again, but this time in a cold serious voice.
The boy tried to sit up, but I push him back down. "No, don't move."
"Than I won't answer your question." He said back.
"You will, if you know what's good for you." Robyn threaten from beside me.
The boy laugh humorously, his black hair falling into his flawless slightly tan face. "You won't hurt me, because I know your secret and I have information that you want."
I got up and look at Robyn, she look back at me and shrug.
"What could you possible know about me?" I laugh, then glare at him. Trying to scare him.
He got up of the dark ground, and dusted himself off. Then he locked eyes with me. "Oh, I know everything. Like how your name is Miayana Hesketh, a 21 years old graphic design student at HCU. You live alone with a dog and a cat, and.....you are Insight, Highland City's superhero."
My heart drop to my stomach, and my mouth falls open. How did he know? I mentally smack my forehead in my mind, of course he knows. He has been watching you. But why?
"Oh, by the way. You can't read my mind, I am immune to your ability."
"H-how did you know she-"
"I told you already, I know everything." He interrupted Robyn, a carefree look on his face.
"You better talk right now!" I yelled, back kicking him in the wall opposite him. I run up to him, and pin him to the wall with my elbow.
My body trembling from anger and also from fear. What does he want from me, I need to know.
He teenage boy also started to tremble, his eyes held fear in them.
"Ok, fine. I will tell you." He said frantically, could feel his heavy heartbeat under my hand.
"What are you waiting for, talk!" I shouted at him.
"Ok, ok. My name is Dai Hesketh, and I am your younger brother.
