I pin him with a withering glare. “I fell skiing. Are you done evading now?”

His gaze is unflinching. “I’m not evading anything. You’ll have to excuse me for not expecting to find a different girl from the one I just saw a few days ago.” A corner of his mouth lifted- the expression full of wicked delight. “Any other brazen changes I’m unaware of?”

I ignore the fluttering of my heart at his blatant delight over my hair- and his curiosity about other areas- and level a flat stare at him. “Why the discretion?”

Shadows cover his face, but he quickly masks it with impenetrable calm as he releases my face and puts distance back between us. He shrugs and casts his gaze down to where he's dragging the toe of his boot across the hardwood floor in a short, horizontal line in front of him. “Because I shouldn’t be here.”
