Chapter 164

When we finally stop to hydrate and take a breather, I’m wrapped in his arms- his heaving, sweat-slicked chest making my head go up and down with the movement- I idly trace the tattoos matching the ones now on my skin, and whisper, “What did you mean earlier when you said for as long as you can?”

His hand pauses it’s stroking my hair, then resumes. “I’ll never be a part of your world,” he says quietly, soberly. “You and I, we’re worlds apart. Completely different worlds. And that’s a good thing for you.”

I prop my chin on his chest and watch my finger still tracing. “What makes you think that?”

“I know it, baby girl.” He brushes his thumb over my lips. “You’re lucky for it. Be grateful and enjoy the life you have.”

“Are you enjoying it now?”
