Unhealthy Accommodation

"Christ, no wonder the Americans gave this building back," said Kev.

Skylab was speechless, and they had only seen the outside. Baby Holly was blissfully unaware of her parents' choice of sightseeing.

"You watch Holly, I'll quiz the staff," said Skylab.

Loose rusty barbed wire, peeling paint, and new steel bars greeted her as she pressed the bell.

"Yes?" a cracked speaker answered.

"I'm here to meet Commander Jackie."

"Wait there."

Skylab looked around to Kev and shook her head. Eventually, a middle-aged portly man opened the gate.

"Lift your arms. No bag?" he asked as he searched her for weapons. Then wordlessly led her to another set of bars, unlocked by a person in shadow from inside. They continued to the guards' office.

"Wait here." He pressed his intercom button. "Yes, ma'am," he said, nodding.

"Follow me, please." He led the way, grim-faced.

The overpowering stench made Skylab gag. She looked around. "Where is that noise coming from?" she wondered. The inhuman, mumbled chatter unnerved her. She then realised it was the brain-numbing gurgle of one inmate.

Khun Jackie sat and stared.

"Hello, I'm Skylab. I tried to fix an appointment."

"Yes, and I've got no time to see you," she answered. The woman was as wide as she was tall, her hair cut short, black James Dean style, boyish and intimidating.

"I don't wish to take much of your valuable time. But, I need to know what has happened to Nick," said Skylab.

"Are you his mother?"

"No."

"His sister?"

"No."

"Then, why are you here?"

"His adoptive mother can't come as she is a nun."

"My record shows that his mother died."

"We don't know what happened to his actual mother. My friend and I cared for him, I want to tell her, he is okay."

"We don't know where he is, if he's alive or dead. But be sure, if he gets caught, he won't get out of here again."

"Is there anything else you can tell me?"

"Other than he killed a boy in here?"

"Did he? What happened?"

"Goodbye, please let us know if you find him."

The woman started shuffling papers.

"So, that's it?" asked Skylab.

Khun Jackie pressed a button. "She the young lady out."

A guard led her to the door.

"Can you help me?" asked Skylab.

"They killed my mate. I want them dead."

He slammed the steel behind her.

Skylab's furious expression told Kev the story.

"Where to now?" he asked.

"Let's try the outfitting shop, they may be more polite."

They pulled up outside the store. "Let me handle this one," said Kev.

"Yes, sir. How can I help you, trousers, shirt or a suit?"

"I'm trying to find some information on the group that escaped from the juvenile centre. Can I speak to the young man that served them?" asked Kev.

"I sacked him. Useless young git."

"Do you know where he lives?"

"I should do, he's my nephew. He can't tell you anything he didn't tell the police. Can I offer you a polo shirt, they are on sale?"

After ringing the young man from the shop, Kev went back to the car empty-handed. No shirt, no information.

"I called the man who had his car stolen," said Skylab.

"The idiot who leaves the door open," said Kev.

"Yes, he didn't see them properly, just his door slamming as they disappeared. He suggested we look at the shop's camera?"

"I've seen it already. Khwam sent stills to my phone. There was a quick glimpse of the children. We know what they look like. But sad to see the bedraggled state they were in," said Skylab.

"So, what's next? The Catholic Church?"

"I'll talk to the secretary, you can take Holly for a walk around the grounds," said Skylab.

Nothing useful came from the meeting at the church. Holly enjoyed her ride around the garden, and Kev was pleased to get a change of scenery. The last stop at the hospital gave them nothing. It was time to find a room for the night and have a rethink.
