A Brawl with Level-3 Zombies

"Now!"

Boom!

When Lu Haixuan took a step back, Yun Che roared. Everybody cast their superfunctions at the gate. The security gate was knocked off, as well as several rattling zombies.

"Attack!"

Without being given an order, everybody roared and rushed in like a bolt of lightning the moment they cast their superfunctions. The zombies got back on their feet and charged at them while yelling. There were quite a few level-3 zombies on this floor, but the total amount was that large. Yang Huaien and Zhan Yafei were dealing with those level-1 and level-2 zombies, the rest of the team charged at those five level-3 zombies.

Boom! Boom!

Zombies weren't much of superfunction possessors, they only got several basic moves whereas human could think, so they were more flexible when it came to superfunction utilization. Long-range attackers Xing Feng, Lu Haixuan, and Yu Wenqing were assisting the melee attackers. Zhao Gang, the melee attacker, whose power was strengthened, actively got into a battle with a level-3 zombie. The four long-range/melee attackers, Yun Che, Leng Yehan, Fang Rui, and Zhou Yuze were fighting with other four level-3 zombies respectively.

Of the five level-3 zombies, two used fire superfunction, one earth, one wood, one water. The wood zombie was the toughest one because his wounds would heal automatically. Zhou Yuze kept cursing when fighting him. Every time his Blade of Wind swiped and hurt him badly, he got all good again in the blink of an eye. His Self-Healing was way more powerful than the Heal of light superfunction.

"Damn, boss, let's swap. I can't kill this fellow. My AOE attack of wind can't harm him. I'm at a disadvantage in the fight with him."

Being unable to damage the mighty zombie, Zhou Yuze cried for a swap of opponent with Yun Che. Because he just got to level 3, he wasn't very proficient at level-3 superfunctions. Every time he aimed at the zombie's head, he would miss it, which had really frustrated him.

"Haixuan, give him a hand."

Yun Che had noticed his predicament. He threw several streaks of lightning at the zombie. When the gold superfunction bullets flew at him, the two of them swapped position.

Self-healing was one of high-level wood superfunction abilities but it wouldn't be this efficient. And this one was only at level 3, he wasn't supposed to be able to heal himself. As the thought hit Yun Che, he quit charging at him with his blade, instead, he chose to enchant the blade with the power of thunder when he was two meters away from the zombie, then struck waves of thunder at the zombie.

Roaaar!

The wood zombie took the hits. He also threw many wooden spikes at Yun Che. With one swipe of blade, Yun Che smashed those wooden spikes in an instant. Right before he was about to press the attack, he heard an imperceptible voice. It was neither a zombie roar nor the sound of battle. When he tried to catch the voice, it disappeared. As he paused, the wood zombie healed himself.

"Beware, guys. Don't forget there's another level-3 creature here."

Yun Che warned everybody with a serious look on his face. He swiped his blade again. This time, he increased concentrated to the limit.

Roar!

Meow!

As the wood zombie backed off while roaring after getting heavily mauled by Yun Che, they heard a cat meowing. The sound was so indistinct, and the corridor was very narrow. They were busy fighting the zombies and didn't have a chance to look over their shoulders, so they didn't notice the cat. Fortunately, it was Zhou Yuze fighting the zombie, if it had been Zhao Gang the melee fighter, the zombie cat could have hurt him.

"Damn, a light superfunction zombie cat! Xing Feng, Yu, keep the wood zombie busy, I must bypass the zombies to take the cat down."

Finally, Yun Che found the key reason for the level-3 zombie's fast self-healing ability. As Yun Che swore in a low voice, a layer of air film wraps him up immediately. Xing Feng and Yu Wenqing, the secondary attackers changed their target, gold superfunction bullets and sharp ice shards darted at the wood zombie all at once. Yun Che snuck to its back and saw a kitten hanging on his back. Whenever the zombie roared, it meowed and healed the zombie at once. It looked like it was an intelligent creature but in fact, it was more like a habitual thing. The best proof was that if the zombie didn't roar, the cat wouldn't meow either.

"I would catch you if you were a mutated cat but too bad, you're a zombie cat."

Yun Che then thrust his blade into the head of the zombie cat. Because he was covered with air film, the zombie cat, who was supposed to pretty nimble, was killed before it could react, and its head was skewered with the wood zombie's back. After getting rid of its crystal nucleus, Yun Che drew the blade out to cut at the wood zombie's skull as he was busy with the attacks from the front.

Thud!

The wood zombie's head was cut in half. Finally, he was taken down. Controlling the air superfunction, Yun Che scooped its crystal nucleus out. Then he attacked other zombies from behind the way he finished the wood zombie off. Zombies, after all, were mindless, however powerful their superfunctions might be, they wouldn't look over their shoulders. The level-3 zombies, who were already almost burned out, were destroyed in a short time.

"Phew! Fighting level-3 zombies is hard. Damn, I'm exhausted."

When the last level-3 zombie fell to the ground, everybody leaned against the wall, panting nonstop. To be fair, the fight didn't last long but its high intensity had drained both their superfunction reserve and energy.

"Fang Rui, block the entrance of the stairwell. Let's take a break."

Xing Feng and Yun Che sat down. They were both worn out. Fang Rui who was given an order went to block the entrance with clay wall in silence.

"Want one?"

Yun Che distributed a bottle of water to everyone and then gave a cigarette to Xing Feng. Zhao Gang sitting opposite them saw this and husked, "I want one, too. I gotta say, melee fight is the hardest."

He was a strengthened power superfunction possessor, he could only harm the zombies in melee range, so he had to plunge into the cluster of zombies every time. His energy consumption was the largest.

"Cigarette for everybody to lift up your spirits. We should meet with Shen Rui after collecting the equipment and information."

Yun Che took two cigarettes out and threw the pack to the team. In no time, the smoke of the cigarette and the foul whiff of the stinking zombies suffused the corridor. They were a bunch of rough guys, no common people could stand this.

"Phew! Don't know how they're doing. If they're in the same situation as us, Jiang Shang can't deal with the zombies single-handed. Plus, they need to protect the space and light superfunction possessors."

Leaning against the wall, Yun Che muttered as he blew a smoke ring. If it was an average match between two teams, he wouldn't give a damn about the other team. But this time, it was different. Jiang Shang and Shen Rui were with them, well, plus Xiu Jie. He just hoped that that kid could take it easy or he might be further unlimitedly traumatized.

"They should be fine. The lab is tough because many people here were infected in the very beginning whereas the pharmacy doesn't have so many floors. Not so many patients were there before doomsday. Even if there're zombies, they are most likely under level 3."

Xing Feng patted on his leg. What was more reassuring was that he'd sent Xiu Jie to heal them when they got hurt. Although Xiu Jie just upgraded to level 2, so his healing power wasn't as great as the zombie cat's but he was good enough. Also, others weren't dummies, they knew how to buy time by taking cover.

"Yeah."

Thud! Thud! Thud!

"What's that?"

Before Yun Che nodded, loud rumbling sounds came into their earshot and the building was also shaking. Although they haven't been refreshed, they still rushed next to the railing to look down from the 20th floor. Superfunction possessors generally had good eyesight, they saw that the outpatient building collapsed for no reason. They couldn't see what was going on behind the thick dust but one thing was sure, it must have something to do with the other team.

"It's not good. You collect the equipment and files. I'll go down and have a look.

"Crap, Che! We're on the 20th floor!"

"So?"

When Yun Che finished talking, he straight jumped over the railing to get down. Xing Feng was so shocked that his heart nearly stopped beating. Zhou Yuze and the rest of the team yelled but when they saw the way Yun Che descended, they remembered that he was an air superfunction possessor. He was plummeting but because of the air friction, it seemed more like he was gliding.

Xing Feng heaved a sigh of relief. He was scared half to death. When this was done, he gotta make some rules with him. He'd have a heart attack sooner or later if it should happen more often.

"Let's follow him."

Without asking for Xing Feng's permission, Leng Yehan turned away and went out after taking a look around the crowd, followed by Zhan Yafei, who rapidly turned the clay wall into sand. Zhou Yuze and Lu Haixuan also followed up. Soon, they disappeared into the distance.

"I'll do the collecting with Zhao Gang. You guys go and help them."

The situation down there must be tricky seeing that the ten-story-high the outpatient building just collapsed. After brief thinking, Xing Feng gave the order. Yun Che must get injured.

"Chief?"

They opened up their eyes in disbelief. Clearly, they disapproved of his decision. A lot of zombies were still in the building, the two of them couldn't deal with all those zombies.

"You're very aware of the importance of this task. Also, I have an announcement to make. Yun Che will the one with whom I'm going to spend the rest of life, I don't want anything to happen to him."

Xing Feng said with a serious tone, scanning the boys with his deep dark eyes.

People were shocked, not by his relationship with Yun Che——They wasn't unaware of what was happening between the chief and Yun Che, otherwise, there wouldn't be an inside joke about the chief being Yun Che's guardian beast——but by Xing Feng's serious eyes. It'd been five years since they left the army after the incident. They later found that their chief had changed. He seemed to remain powerful and flawless but they were under his command since they were teenagers, how could they not to notice his nuanced changes? So after the five-year circle, the old chief was coming back?

"Let's move!"

Yu Wenqing, the first guy came to himself, smiled at Xing Feng and said, "It's our duty to protect our chief's honey. Since you are willing to be an almighty guardian beast, then we won't dissent."

"Heh heh, thanks. Gang and I will be right after you."

Thumping the chest with his fist, Xing Feng thanked the boys with a smile. No one would be more dependable than these brothers of his.

"OK. Chief, Gang, take care."

Yu Wenqing and the other two guys left when he finished talking. Meanwhile, Xing Feng and Zhao Gang turned around to enter the lab to collect equipment and information.
