The living room had a completely different look when Yun Che went downstairs. The walls were covered with small balloons of various colors—some were made into the shape of a heart with the word "love" or "birthday" in the middle and some were hanging from the ceiling with luminous ribbons that had two-inch photos of Chenchen pasted on their ends. There were also paper cuttings with the words "happy birthday" etc. pasted on the wall, and the whole house looked like a dreamy children's world.
"Look, Brother, I did this."
When the sharp-eyed Yun Cheng saw Yun Che, he quickly took the double-layer heart-shaped balloon he inflated and showed it to him. They had been busy but happy preparing the whole morning.
"Hmm, looks great. You guys have fun, I gotta bring some stuff to Sis in the kitchen."
Yun Che gave his younger brother an encouraging look and patted him on the head.
"Okay, come back quickly, Brother!"
Yun Cheng nodded and went back to Leng Yehan. Jiang Shang and Ye Xingchen had also joined in to stick something, and some others were decorating the rest of the ceiling on a ladder while some were responsible for passing things. Everyone was behaving like children, and Yun Che took a few more glances at them before shaking his head and leaving.
"Did you make this, Auntie Chen? You're so skillful."
Before Yun Che walked into the kitchen, he saw his sister and some others gathered in the dining room. He went forward and saw Lu's mom decorating a ten-inch double-layer cake. On the surface of the cake was a house painted with different colors of jam, on top of which stood a cute-looking beast, and on the opposite side was a fat Ultraman. Yun Che thought the black dog-like beast looked like a cuter version of Heiyu no matter how he looked at it. As for the size of the Ultraman, it was probably a hint that Chenchen looked chubby and adorable, although he wasn't sure how Chenchen would react when he saw it. Nonetheless, it was very nicely done and full of creativity.
"That's nothing. Our family used to live in the countryside, and my daughter always said she wanted to eat the delicious food she saw on TV. Her dad bought an oven after that, so I'd make snacks for them whenever I had the time."
Lu's mom, who was still making the final decorations, said with a smile when she looked up and saw Yun Che. There was pain hidden in her eyes when she talked about her daughter. Although her son had already told her that her daughter's death had nothing to do with her and that she was harmed by the wicked family, she would occasionally still think that she should have tried to understand her daughter better instead of simply reprimanding her upon hearing her involvement with the major. Otherwise, she wouldn't have run out and ended up with an unsound mind before dying a tragic death.
Nonetheless, she was happy most of the time and only thought about this once in a while. Yun Che was right about letting the deceased rest in peace, and those alive should continue with their normal lives. Her father was now getting more agile and didn't look old at all. Her son had become stronger under Yun Che's leadership and also found himself a spouse. Even though he was a man, she was fine with it as long as the two of them were happy. She believed her mother, husband and daughter would be able to rest in peace now that the three generations of their family were living happily together.
"Great! We'll leave you to make our birthday cakes from now on, Auntie Chen. Me and Cheng's birthday is in October, don't forget that."
Yun Che didn't abstain from sweets, mainly because food was scarce in his previous life. He couldn't afford to be picky and didn't refrain from eating cakes and such. Moreover, the cakes Lu's mom made were cute and lifelike, so he would definitely feel good eating them.
"Sure, I'll make you two a bigger one."
As it was rare to hear him say such childish words, both Wang Suhua and her daughter also laughed. Lu's mom agreed right away, and Yun Yao chided, "You're still acting like a kid at this age!"
"I'm a kid to my sister even if I'm eighty years old!"
Yun Che gave her a shoulder hug and even winked mischievously at her, leaving Yun Yao dumbfounded. The cake was done when Lu's mom finally inserted a chocolate chip with the words "Happy Birthday" on it. As the weather was hot, Lu's mom carefully put the cake in the refrigerator to prevent the cream on it from melting.
"Sis, are these fish enough?"
Yun Che took out a few big live carps out of thin air. He had already given them the other ingredients in the morning, except the fish.
"Those are enough, where's Chenchen?"
Yun Yao thought of her son only after taking the big carps from Yun Che. She had been busy the whole morning until now and didn't have time for him at all. She only knew that Yun Che had taken him upstairs and that was about it.
"He's playing with Heiyu, I'll go get him later."
"Alright, you can go out if there's nothing else, don't get in the way."
She wasn't worried knowing that her son was with Heiyu. Yun Yao then picked up the kitchen knife and drove Yun Che out.
"Wei Kan came with his men at around eight o'clock, and they're still next door. I heard from Yang that he seemed to have guessed that you intercepted their supplies and wanted to intercede with you. Captain Xing said you weren't in but they didn't believe him and continued loitering around."
The moment Yun Che walked out of the kitchen, Zhan Yafei came up to him and gloated. They got their just deserts for sending their invisibility superfunction possessor over to steal confidential information. She was adamant in not returning the supplies since they couldn't find any evidence.
"What supplies? It's none of my f***ing business."
"Haha…exactly, it's none of our f***ing business!"
Zhan Yafei was overjoyed when she heard that Che had no intention of returning the supplies at all. Although they weren't short of supplies, they were still happy to give their enemies a setback due to lack of supplies.
"Nah, I gotta satisfy them since they're here to let us torture them. Wanna join in the fun?"
Yun Che cast an evil look while talking, and Zhan Yafei was really tempted. However, she shook her head when she thought about the birthday party at noon, "Forget it, I gotta stay here to help out. How can torturing them be more important than giving Chenchen a perfect birthday?"
They were even planning to grill skewers in the yard in the evening. They had all unanimously decided to make Chenchen's birthday celebration lively and full of excitement. Yun Che had also delivered a lot of wild animals, fruits and vegetables to the mess hall so that Chef Qin could prepare a feast for everyone.
"That's true, I'll go over and send them about their business. They shouldn't be here bothering us on this celebratory day."
Yun Che nodded in agreement as he walked out. As Zhan Yafei giggled behind him, Meng Xu suddenly popped out from behind and shook his head, "They can count themselves unlucky to have provoked Che."
After knowing him for some time, he could tell that Che was usually very down-to-earth and could easily get along with the various superfunction squads. He would smile and nod at those who took the initiative to greet him, even if they were from squads he didn't know well, provided they hadn't offended him before. However, if anyone provoked him, he would get Heiyu to torture them even if he didn't do so personally. Since Wei Army stole their confidential information last time and caused them to suffer a huge loss, there was no way Che would let them off lightly.
"Exactly."
Zhan Yafei turned around, and the two of them exchanged glances, smiling with a gloating expression in their eyes. Under the influence of Yun Che, everyone from Peak Squad had similar temperaments to a certain extent—they would make life difficult for whoever provoked them, even if it was the military.
The atmosphere in the living room next door was a little solemn as compared to the liveliness at the other side. For the two hours that they had been here, Wei Kan and his men had been drinking tea and swallowing their anger without even touching on the issue they wanted to solve. Every time Wei Kan spoke, either Xing Feng or Gu Mingxuan would cleverly change the topic, and they had yet to even see Yun Che.
"It's almost eleven o'clock, why isn't Captain Yun back yet?"
Lin Xian, who had been sitting behind Wei Kan, looked at his watch and finally interrupted their conversation. How could Yun Che not be around when there was continuous laughter coming from next door?
Hearing this, Xing Feng slowly looked up and glanced at him indifferently with his sharp eyes without bothering to answer him. Gu Mingxuan's face turned grim, "Who are you asking, Major General Lin? Let me remind you that this is Chaoyang, not Wei Amy, and we're not your soldiers."
Who was he to see Che? Given his impetuousness, he would probably be tortured to death if he really got to see Che.
"Lin Xian!"
Sensing that the mood wasn't right, Wei Kan reprimanded him in a low voice and regretted bringing him here. How could he have such an attitude when they were here to ask for help today? It was terrible that he didn't know his place, and Wei Kan wondered why a shrewd person like Lin Xian had become like this. Was it merely because of the previous incident where Yun Che had upset him?
"You've reminded me, Major General Lin. It's already eleven o'clock and you're still not leaving?"
Others would have joked and mediated things under such circumstances, but Xing Feng told them straight in the face to leave. He might have shown Wei Kan some respect in the past, but the invisibility superfunction possessor incident had made Xing Feng lose all respect for Wei Kan, even if Wei Army still had one-third of the right to decide the ownership of the research institute.
"Captain Xing, please pardon my subordinate's ignorance, we…"
"Oh, what a crowd, you've even made a trip here personally, Wei. Oh, Lin, you've been on my mind since our last meeting."
Wei Kan opened his mouth awkwardly and was about to get to the subject when he finally heard the protagonist's voice. The dozen of Wei Army's men all got a shock, but soon showed a strange expression on their faces after hearing the way he addressed Wei Kan and Lin Xian. They felt even worse when they saw him with both hands in his pockets and a newly lit cigarette in his mouth, looking like a gangster.
"Where's Chenchen?"
"You're finally here, Captain Yun."
Xing Feng and Lin Xian spoke almost at the same time—the former tender and loving; the latter enigmatic and vicious. Wei Kan's face was red with anger, "Lin Xian, shut up!"
Damn, did he know what he was doing? Did he still want to get back the supplies?
"Oh come on, Wei, you're too stern towards your subordinates, look at how angry Lin is! You should learn from Chief Xing, he doesn't yell at his brothers like this. A general should be more magnanimous."
Instead of being annoyed by Lin Xian, Yun Che started lecturing Wei Kan. Wei Kan had a grave expression on his face, and the rest of the Wei Army looked totally defeated. They had long heard that Captain Yun of Peak Squad was extremely unpredictable, but they had thought that those were just rumors. How could the captain of the number-two squad in the base be so undependable? However, after hearing him say just a few sentences, they felt that the rumors had underplayed things—he wasn't just unpredictable, he was simply out of his mind!
