The zombies kept making noises outside the Coastal Base 7 in the morning. Waves and waves of zombies collided with colorful, dazzling superfunction barrages. Inside the base, the engines roared when several vehicles rushed to the wall, they stopped with an awesome shift. Xing Feng firstly got off a vehicle with one hand holding Chenchen and another holding Yun Che's hand. Heiyu lied on Yun Che's shoulder in his puppy form as usual. They were followed by Leng Yehan, Yun Cheng, Zhou Zeyu. Xing Xingchen, the Wolf King and the others got off other vehicles, as well as Tan Weiye and Miao Xinbai. The soldiers in charge of order control saluted them.
"Where is the admiral?"
Tan Weiye saluted back but his face looked bad. Not until they finished the meal and sent Chenchen home did they realize Admiral Tan was gone, and this was why they rushed here.
"On the turret!"
The soldiers could feel how they felt. Without delay, Tan Weiye went straight up the turret. Chaoyang and Peak guys made eye contact and followed him.
"What is Unit 7 doing? Go to them, reinforcements, Unit 6 and 8, cover them."
"Yes!"
On the turret, the one-arm admiral yelled to the speakerphone. The skinny, roaring man seemed frail, but the energy he gave was overpowering. His charisma impressed all superfunction soldiers and possessors, they would do whatever he ordered them to do. They wouldn't even have a second thought even if Admiral Tan asked them to sacrifice for the base. The Coastal Base was several times more united than the Southwest Base, which also demonstrated how important it was for a base to have a good leader.
"Grandpa!"
Tan Weiye snatched the speakerphone from the old man. "Can't you fight without the admiral? Listen up, you fight based on your own experience."
"Great-grandpa."
The old man wasn't insistent as his grandson had every right to be mad at him. Chenchen's voice saved him timely. The old man looked back and saw Chenchen waving at him with a beaming face. The boy wasn't afraid as if the battle wasn't even happening.
"Why did you bright the kid here?"
Although the old man was aware that the kid had seen enough blood, he still gave Yun Che a criticizing look when he took the boy over. Chenchen squirmed out of the old man's arm holding him and slid down. "Great-grandpa, I'm not afraid. They're bad guys, Chenchen will beat bad guys with my uncles!"
"What? You guys kill zombies together?"
After getting what Chenchen said, the old man gave Yun Che a glower. "How did he raise the boy? Is he his real uncle?"
"Grandpa, do you think we should live like what we used to live before the doomsday anymore?"
Yun Che didn't jokingly muddle it through this time. He turned around and looked at the sea of zombies down there with a cold, vicious smile. Looking at his side face, the old man sunk into thoughts. Right, this was the doomsday, you shouldn't raise a kid like you would before the doomsday. What Yun Che did might seem harsh for a three-year-old, but this was for Chenchen's good. Surviving in the doomsday required a tough mind and body, zombies wouldn't care if you were an adult or a kid. The earlier Chenchen was prepared for everything, the sooner he could protect himself. This was the right method to raise the boy. Plus, Yun Che must have felt bad because even a non-biological great-grandpa felt bad for the kid, but this was tough love!
"Hehe. Grandpa, let me introduce Cheng to you. This is my twin brother. This is our grandpa, Yun Cheng."
Soon, Yun Che erased emotions from his face. He got Yun Cheng here with a smile. Yun Cheng looked at his brother, then at the old man eyeballing him, and he finally said, "Hi, grandpa!"
"OK, good boy."
He was such a good kid who didn't look like a zombie at all. The old man felt bad. Excitement was all over his face. These were all good kids, the old man wished the Gold would be nicer to them.
"Grandpa, this is Leng Yehan, Cheng's boyfriend."
Yun Cheng didn't enjoy knowing strangers, so Yun Che considerately stood in between. Right before he tried to introduce others when he finished introducing Leng Yehan, the old man slightly squinted. "Leng Yehan? Who is Leng Mei to you?"
Having heard that, even Yun Che looked at Leng Yehan with curiosity, as well as the others. Leng Yehan knitted his eyebrows the moment he heard the name Leng Mei, but soon the brows unknitted. He replied in an absolute calm tone of vice, "She's mom. She passed away two years ago."
"She's dead?"
The old man faltered. Tan Weiye held him timely. "Granddad, who is this Leng Mei and why did you…"
This was the first time he saw his granddad got so emotional except for his parents' funeral. Who was this Leng Mei and what was her relationship with us?
"Leng Mei, the daughter of the former commander of 007 Group Army, she was appointed major general and lieutenant general by the authorities with my aunt Xing Tianlan. They were the only two female generals that controlled a whole army. She died of sickness two years ago. It's said that she never got married, but did a son whose identity was still uncovered. After she died, 007 Group Army fell into the hands of the supreme leader's henchman.
Xing Feng imperturbably narrated Leng Mei's life but that wasn't everything. His granddad had told him that the Leng Family used to be one of the most honorable families in China. For two generations, the family contributed many revolutionary warriors, but after the Reform, Leng Family was like under a curse. The family started to diminish, most of the family members died of either sickness or war. In the end, Leng Mei's family was the only living branch but his father's military power had shrunken. Leng Mei only succeeded 007 Group Army from his dad and after she died, the title of the army was changed. That was the end of Leng Family.
But if Leng Yehan was Leng Mei's son, he would be the only successor of Leng Family.
"I'm glad you're still alive. Leng Mei was a silly girl, but at least she kept hope for your family."
A while later, Admiral Tan shook Tan Weiye off. He held Leng Yehan's arms tightly. People might not see this but Leng Yehan could clearly feel that the old man's hands were shaking. Leng might be an aloof man, but he was touched at this very moment because the old man was getting emotional on account of him and his family.
"Did you know my mom?"
"Sort of. I held her when she was little. Her dad and I were childhood friends. Old General Leng taught and trained us. Good boy, the future of Leng Family is on you."
After patting Leng Yehan on the shoulder, Admiral Tan withdrew his hands. It could be noticed that his eyes were a little red. No one knew how emotional he was at the moment apart from himself. That age was different, they were brother in arms, they were passionate and fearless, they valued friendships and held mentors in high respect. General Leng was Admiral Tan's commander and also a father figure to him. Leng Family used to be glorious, it was a fact that most of the meritorious old general fought under Leng Family. Hadn't Leng Family been selfless, several Leng family members would have been the leaders of the nation. It was a shame that Leng Family died so fast.
"I got it."
Although Leng Yehan never wanted to reinvigorate his family, he just couldn't say those words when he looked the old man in his expectant eyes, and his personality wouldn't allow him to say so anyway.
"Granddad, I haven't introduced others to you."
Yun Che cut in when he felt the time was right. He then introduced Ye Xingchen, Jiang Shang and all the other people. Yun Che, too, was curious about Leng Yehan's background but he thought it wasn't the right to ask and he was sure Leng Yehan would talk about it when he felt like it, so he chose not to be nosy. Would they like or dislike him just because of his background? Obviously, no. So it wouldn't make a difference whether they knew it or not. It was just for the satisfaction of curiosity.
"Admiral Tan!"
It was Shen Rui's turn. He and other Chaoyang guys lined up and saluted the old man like Xing Feng did yesterday. Tan Jianting saluted back after scanning every one of them. "You're still full of energy, my soldiers. I'm old now, I used to take you here and there, now it's your turn."
"Yes, sir!"
Even though they had left the army, they still had respect for the admiral.
"All right, thanks for coming, it'll be a tough day, I'll leave you alone. Chenchen, come with great-grandpa, OK?"
After another look at them, Adiraml Tan looked down at Chenchen and pointed at the command turret. He would be watching how they killed the zombies and how the Coastal Base got out of danger on its own in there.
"OK. Follow me, great-grandpa."
Chenchen held the old man's hand. Before they left, he smiled at everybody, "Uncle, I wish you a victory!"
"OK."
Yun Che turned away after a nod. "Heiyu, go protect Chenchen and the old admiral. We'll fight in the battle."
"I got it."
For some reason, Heiyu was still low-spirited. He jumped off Yun Che's shoulder and caught Chenchen up after a spiritless reply. Yun Che slightly frowned but soon shook the concern off. He turned to Tan Weiye. "Now you're relieved, right? Granddad and Chenchen will be fine because Heiyu will be protecting them from the zombies. I understand that the concerned old man wants to witness the base being secured, let's leave him be."
The few days of rest wouldn't matter. If they wanted the old admiral to be relieved earlier, they'd better fight harder.
"OK. I'll let you command the troops."
Tan Weiye gave them a bunch of walkie-talkies that he got from Miao Xinbai. Yun Che didn't say no, however…
"I won't command the troops, you command your own units, but look alive, you follow us, but don't hurt us by mistake."
Yun Che was a fighter but not a commander of 100,000 soldiers.
"OK, then. Shall we begin?"
It was almost 8 am. The tireless zombies never stopped the attack. The sooner the battle could end, the fewer casualties there would be.
"Yeah."
*Whistle*
Yun Che nodded and summoned his dark blade. Xing Feng whistled, and two golden eagles started to dive.
"Hold the attack!"
Tan Weiye gave the order to all units through the walkie-talkie. Almost immediately, all superfunction possessors ceased the attack. Before the zombies' superfunction power hurt them, Yun Che, Xing Feng, Leng Yehan and Yun Cheng got off from the turret on the eagles. Without being told, the other guys followed them by getting out of the wall through the gate. Tan Weiye and Miao Xinbai swiftly split up to muster the soldiers and superfunction possessors.
