Yun Che and the gang got the answer to their doubts after dinner. Tan Weiye was indeed planning to come to the southwest with his grandfather, but they encountered level-5 zombies on the way and fled back. In order to save his injured companions, he had even used up the spring water from Yun Che. Long-distance travel was no longer as easy as before now that level-5 zombies had finally appeared.
Yun Che: I'm glad you guys are okay. You should have informed me that you're coming so that Cheng and I could go pick you. Why did you have to be so secretive?
Yun Che was chatting with Tan Weiye online. After learning before dinner that they were coming, Yun Che had left a message for Tan Weiye, but the latter only replied not long ago.
Tan Weiye: I wanted to give you a surprise, who would have thought that we would encounter level-5 zombies on the way? Damn, we are still only level-4, how did the zombies level up so fast?
Yun Che: It's been almost three months since the snowstorm. It's not surprising that level-5 zombies have appeared. After all, they have more ways than us to level-up.
Tan Weiye: How's your research going? We gotta catch up with the zombies.
Yun Che: Haha…it's already in the experimental stage, things are moving very fast. I gotta go if there's nothing else, good night!
Knowing that he would ask this, Yun Che quickly went offline after brushing him off. Seeing their conversation, Xing Feng covered his mouth and chuckled. That fella was getting from bad to worse—look at how terrified Che was.
"Grandpa and Ye are okay, level-5 zombies have appeared."
After giving him a dirty look, Yun Che pinched Xing Feng on his waist while explaining to Yun Yao and the rest.
"Damn!"
Chu Haoling cursed out and stopped biting the wild fruit in his hand. The others also looked a little grim, and the atmosphere was a little solemn. Gu Mingxuan touched his chin and thought for a while before saying, "Do you think we should take some measures? Since level-5 zombies have already appeared, they will definitely pop up in large numbers. We gotta do something so that we won't be caught off guard."
This was especially so for the squads that had to go out on quests every day. They were more likely to encounter the level-5 zombies.
"It shouldn't be us taking measures, the base should be doing it instead."
Yun Che chimed in even though his hand was held by Xing Feng.
"The base?"
Gu Mingxuan, Ye Xingchen and the rest all looked at him with a puzzled expression—what could the base do? They were now fretting over the seeds not sprouting, how would they have time to do anything about this?
"Well, level-5 zombies are still manageable, but level-6 zombies have IQ. If no preparations are being done this time, we will probably be the next in line to be surrounded by zombies."
High-level zombies with IQ would gather their companions, which was also the fundamental reason why there were only seven bases left in the country during the doomsday. Small bases weren't able to withstand attacks from zombies.
"Do you mean we should propose to the three armies and the government to continue expanding the base?"
Xing Feng frowned slightly. This wasn't something difficult since the third wall of the base had been built, but everyone in the base was now fretting over the fact that food couldn't be grown on most of the land. Even if they made this proposal, the three armies and the government wouldn't take action right away.
"Not to expand, but to have the entire Wan'an area in the base by building the wall all the way to the Lingjiang River embankment."
"What?!"
Yun Che's words made everyone stare at him blankly with their mouths slightly open. Did they hear him right? He wanted to include the entire Wan'an City into the base's territory? There were at least a million zombies in Wan'an City, and getting rid of them alone wasn't an easy task. Was he joking? Even they couldn't accept having to put so much effort into it, let alone the military.
"Why don't we talk to Wei, Wang and Wan tomorrow?"
Yun Che said to Xing Feng, as if he didn't see their shocked faces. During this period of time, Wei, Wang and Wan had actually looked them up several times, but they had given the excuse of being busy every time, knowing that it was because of other people's land not being able to grow crops well. Only the wheat in their greenhouse had grown to a height, and even Joy and Loser Squads had already harvested lettuce and cabbage for a season. It was obvious that there was something wrong. They had also tried to build greenhouses like them in the military's private plot, but still couldn't achieve the same results.
"Should I sympathize with them?"
Xing Feng joked after being stunned for a moment. He believed Yun Che had his own way of thinking, but Wei and the others were probably going to be tormented by him again.
"Haha…"
Yun Che merely laughed and didn't say anything else. Whether he would play a trick on them or not depended on how Wei and the others reacted. Besides, since he had too much time on hand lately, he could have some fun.
"It's getting late, let's go into the Space."
Seeing that it was almost ten o'clock, Yun Che stood up and stretched himself, and the rest didn't bother to continue thinking about what he was planning to do. After closing the doors and windows, they entered the Space with him. They had been practicing every night during this period of time. With the ample spiritual energy in the Space and also the Jade Spring, they had all reached at least the sixth level of cultivating qi. Yun Che and Xing Feng had even entered the foundation building stage, and Chenchen was already at the peak of the cultivation of qi. According to Heiyu, Chenchen had spiritual roots throughout his body, and also because of his young age, his speed was naturally faster than them. Going forward, he might probably progress faster than Xing Feng and be on par with Yun Che, because the two of them wouldn't encounter any bottleneck.
This was a huge blow to Zhou Zeyu and the rest. In order to catch up with them, they had been practising very hard every night.
"Che, can I have a word with you?"
Yun Che's Space had undergone a big change. The area had increased by a fair bit as a result of the people coming in. The most special thing was that a whole row of at least a hundred large tiled houses had been built on the edge of the planting area. Bamboos were planted around the houses, and there was a large bamboo forest behind. The mutant giant pandas that he put into the Space previously were kept there. Due to the influence of the law of Space and Heiyu's coercion, they had all changed back into their adorable form from before the doomsday and seldom show their scary mutated form. Chenchen often visited them with Xiaobai and even brought them delicious fruits. The area was now their playground. Yun Cheng, Ye Xingchen and the rest had even built a small wooden house for him in the middle of the bamboo forest so that he could rest inside when he got tired.
The fruit tree seedlings Yun Che had planted at the foot of the mountain before the doomsday had grown into trees, and some of them even had green fruits hanging. The whole area at the foot of the mountain looked very appealing with all the fruit trees, and it wouldn't be long before he could eat the fruits he planted. Also, the poultry he had gotten from Chaoyang in order to expand the Space had grown up and even hatched young birds. He had placed them in the fruit forest and gotten Heiyu to warn the creatures in the Space not to harm them. They would have limitless poultry for consumption in the future.
According to past practice, after everyone entered the Space, they would go into their respective rooms to meditate and practice. As for Yun Che, he would first check on the vegetables and grains in the ground before checking on Heiyu's recovery in the cave. Ever since subduing the giant pandas, he hadn't let Heiyu out and even ordered him to practise cultivation for recovery. Knowing that he couldn't remain stagnant, Heiyu was rather obedient this time, coming out only occasionally for a breather and asking the others if they had installed the energy bar equipment for him so that he could start the production himself after he recovered.
However, Yun Che was stopped by Shuiyu when he came back from the mountain today. Knowing what she wanted to say, Yun Che sat down with her at the stone table in the bamboo forest in front of the houses, "Cultivation can also strengthen your physique so that you can take better care of Auntie, why are you so bent on having superfunctions?"
Shuiyu was working really hard at it, and was already at the sixth level of cultivating qi.
"But it's too slow. I want to gain power faster. Uncle only agreed to let one of us participate in the experiment. Che, they will definitely change their minds if you speak to them."
Shuiyu looked up at him, saying firmly with her fists clenched. She was determined to have superfunctions.
"Haha…actually, I really like your personality, you're sentimental and fearless. But Shuiyu, if I tell you there's a possibility that Auntie would have her damaged nerve repaired once she has a superfunction triggered, and she won't have to be in a wheelchair anymore, will you insist on doing it yourself?"
Shuiyu must have already decided to let Auntie be the test subject before coming to him, but he wanted to know whether Shuiyu merely wanted to gain power for herself or really just so that she could take better care of Kong's mom. The human heart is unpredictable, so he had no choice but to test her, even though she wouldn't betray him even if she was really just selfish.
"Really?!"
Shuiyu trembled slightly as her eyes widened with emotions. Seeing Yun Che nod, she gritted her teeth and said, "If Auntie can really stand up from gaining superfunctions, I'm willing to give up this chance, but I won't give up the chance to have superfunctions. If Auntie recovers, I would like to go out with Jiawen on quests. I want to become stronger, so that I can protect Uncle and Auntie and our home together with Jiawen in the future."
The doomsday was indeed a good environment to educate people. If this was before the doomsday, young girls like Shuiyu would probably be throwing tantrums at their boyfriends. However, Shuiyu had taken the initiative to assume the responsibility of protecting her family, and there was determination in her eyes even though she knew it would be very difficult. One could tell that she was serious about it.
"I can't use my identity as the head of the family to ask Vice-President Kong to change his decision, but I can give you superfunctions if you want."
"Really?!"
Shuiyu stood up emotionally this time, her body clearly shaking—she really had great desire for superfunctions. Yun Che smiled and nodded, "Yes, and you can get it tonight, are you sure you want it?"
"Yes! Thank you, Che."
Shuiyu nodded without hesitation, but quickly composed herself and asked, "Then Auntie…"
If Che had a foolproof method to trigger superfunctions, Auntie wouldn't have to gamble on the one-percent chance. Accidents could happen to test subjects.
"Haha… what I said about Auntie having the chance to recover after gaining superfunctions was just a speculation without any basis. She has been in a wheelchair for many years after all. Do you think I'd keep it a secret if I was really 100% confident?"
Shuiyu was really an honest young girl. Yun Che said as he stood up, "Come with me."
"Oh."
Shuiyu was a little disappointed, but seeing that Yun Che had already walked out, she quickly picked herself up and caught up with him. It was okay. Even if Auntie had to remain in a wheelchair, she would still take care of her for the rest of her life.
