The Moonstone

What is the moonstone exactly? Well, it's a symbol of beginning.

All life has a beginning. The beginning of the werewolves was thousands of years ago, during a time where people roamed the earth. The moon goddess, then just considered a spirit and now called by many names, sent a piece of herself to a group of nomads. As the piece fell, it formed into a solid piece of bright stone made of orthoclase and albite.

The nomads saw it falling and believed it to be a falling star, or perhaps a piece of heaven falling onto them. Many scattered into the trees nearby, trying to get out of harm's way, but a small group stayed. They stared in wonder, captivated by the sparkling beauty speeding at them. The stone fell into the middle of them, creating a geyser of dirt to fly up into the air even as a bright light burst from it, encasing the group of nomads.

The moon goddess' voice spoke to them, telling them she was gifting them with a piece of herself. She wanted them to make the area their home, and to protect the stone. She explained that by gifting them with the piece, that it would make them more than what they were. Nomads cried out as a flowing power filled them. The strongest one, a man who often led the whole group of nomads to their next place, was given more strength than the others and the title of Alpha. A woman, bright and excellent in hunting, was given the title of Beta. The moon goddess told her to help build their new home, to help make decisions with the Alpha for the good of their people.

Those who thought they had escaped the falling stone were also engulfed in the light, listening to the soft encouragement of the goddess as she let the full moon shine fully in the valley to give them all strength. With the strength came the ties of Fate, destinies falling into place side by side as the instincts of a wolf filled each nomad. The goddess gave a couple nomads the task of traveling outside of the area, knowing that to spread the gift she would need them to leave and join other nomadic groups.

As the light slowly faded, the Alpha howled at the moon, slowly changing into the body of a wolf. The rest of the nomads, the pack, followed. Before the light faded completely, the goddess warned them to never let the stone fall into the hands of those who would hurt them.

As the town grew and the nomad's families grew, the number of those who turned into werewolves grew. Eventually, they learned that they had soulmates, people who they were connected to more strongly than anyone else. This led to younger generations setting out on their own to find their mates, and eventually the rise of other packs. It also led to the banishment of those who cheated, stole, and murdered, now called rogues.

Centuries passed, and the first pack was eventually named the Moonstone Pack. They protected the stone, now verified as being musgravite, and kept it from falling into the wrong hands. The stone still held power within it, but the line of alphas and lunas of the Moonstone Pack kept it hidden, wanting to keep the power dormant so that they could live peacefully.
