Chapter 264: Moving to the Lodge

“Here we are,” Jackie said, pushing open the door to a bedroom on the second floor of the lodge. “It’s a bit musty, I’m afraid. We haven’t used this room in a while.”

Scott gave her a soft smile. “No worries, Jackie. I’ve been roughing it for years.”

“I know,” she answered, unable to stop the crack in her voice. I will not cry anymore in front of this man.

“But you came here to relax before you start your new business, and now all your stuff burned up, and…”

“It’s okay.” His voice was soft as he reached for her.

“I have to get you some sheets.” She turned quickly to hide her tears. Crossing the hall, she opened a closet door and retrieved a set of linens, a blanket, and a pair of pillows.

Afraid to look up, she pushed past him into the room and began putting the sheets on the bed.

“Jackie?”

“I’ll be done in just a minute. It’s been a long day, I know you’re ready to go to bed.”

“Jackie.”
