For the next couple of days, a lot of things happened to Boss Lu. He stayed in the hospital to heal, and authorities came to question him as a suspect. And just like he thought, once he was safe to be discharged they asked him to come with them. Boss Lu didn't struggle. His mood wasn't good after he got the news about Leng Zheng.
Leng Zhang was currently in a coma. Apparently, when the car was about to hit their vehicle, Leng Zhang had turned the car at an angle where the impact was focused on him. So, out of the two of them, Leng Zhang took the most damage.
Boss Lu had visited Leng Zhang's room. The sight of his longtime friend laying on the white sheets with different sized tubes inserted in different parts of his body. Boss Lu couldn't even see his whole face as it was covered by the large breathing support attached to his mouth. The repetitive sound of the heart monitor irked Boss Lu greatly. Death was at his door, he could tell. Leng Zheng wouldn't have that much longer to live. His life hung over a cliff. The only string stopping him from falling was hanging on by a thread.
Boss Lu walked close to the bed and placed his palm on Leng Zheng's forehead. It was cold to the touch. Almost cold enough that Boss Lu doubted whether or not he was still alive. His face was solemn as he said to the still body, "Thank you... Leng Zheng."
Boss Lu has met a lot of people. And he has befriended a lot too. There were a lot of people just like Leng Zheng, people that he's been with for years. It was hard at first, moving onto the next world and leaving the people he knew behind. But he's gotten used to it after so many repeats. He has already become numb to it.
But this world was different. At least to him, it was. This was the world where everything would change. Where he would overthrow his suppressors and rise to the top. It was the dream he's had for years. The one thing that he's been working towards for the longest time. Every sense he first woke up. Ever since he first experienced that first world.
The authorities had taken custody of him and brought him in. It was a large spectacle where news reporters and cameramen surrounded him. The well-known business tycoon was supposedly brought to justice for murder. While he was forced into the vehicle Boss Lu once again spotted a familiar structure of a man in the crowd. Boss Lu cracked a smile and prepared himself. And he was right to do so as only a couple of seconds later a loose cameraman was pushed out of the crowd and fell towards him. The camera would have landed directly on his head if it weren't for the opening of the car door. The large, heavy camera hit the frame of the car door and broke at the contact. Boss Lu would have pitied the owner if he wasn't laughing at the missed attempt to off him.
That wasn't the only time that happened. While entering a building, two large men were holding his arms as they forced him inside. A clay pot fell from the roof and almost killed him. If it wasn't for the man holding his right arm taking the hit for him and getting sent to the emergency room in his stead, he would be bleeding out on the ground. This caused quite the conundrum as they thought that someone was planning on rescuing him. They were wrong of course, they were trying to kill him, and that man was just some innocent bystander. But Boss Lu didn't say anything as he gave a sweet smile to the man holding his left arm. Which must have looked intimidating to the big man as Boss Lu could see his nervous sweats.
And once again this happened when they entered the building. A man had escaped from his holding cell and was heading towards him with a shank. Another thing that would have probably killed him on the spot. He was prepared to try his best to dodge out of the way, but he didn't need to because the man ended up slipping on his shoelaces and falling on his own shank.
Boss Lu watched as the second man of the day was bleeding before him and thought, wasn't this too much?! Of course, things like this have happened to him before. His protagonist halo was just too bright for some schemers, but nothing this blatant! Usually, assassination attempts would be stopped before they would happen and schemes wouldn't show up unless they were meant for the story. But did the story really need to kill this man so pathetically? Poor guy just embarrassed himself by tripping on his shoelace stabbing himself with his own weapon.
Boss Lu knew that this wasn't caused by the man that broke into his hospital room, but instead was set up by a system. It was said before that the systems don't have full control over characters that have no meaning and that they're just normal humans living in their own world. And that's true, those people do not have acting programs installed into them, nor are they data like Boss Lu is. They are real flesh and blood. But just because they can't control them with acting programs or rules set up in their minds doesn't mean that they can't manipulate them to do something. After all, how would the story progress if there were no side characters to play their parts?
In these worlds, the system plays a part close to being a god. So, although they are humans and not data, they're still technically created by the system. Their familys' past, their financial situations, how they grow up, the schools they go to, what they want to do in life, their spouses, all of this is planned out beforehand. So when it doesn't go according to the plot, transmigrators are sent in to fix it. By either replacing them or another character that would put them back into place. That's why Boss Lu thought that the man he saw was different. Transmigrators are usually sent into another's body to take it over. Yet Boss Lu could tell that the body that that man was in was his own or at least one that he was in for an extended amount of time.
After thinking about it, Boss Lu knew that the car crash was from the same source as all of these incidents. They weren't manmade. They were cases of luck gone bad and being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Boss Lu called out to the system that followed him around. And as he thought, the glowing mass appeared in front of him.
The long-time ally turned enemy only gave Boss Lu part of his attention. Boss Lu could have sworn that if the system had eyes they would be only giving him a side glance.
"It's satisfying to see such a troublemaker cuffed to a table." The system gave out a small scoffing sound spun around in a circle. Boss Lu didn't know exactly what it was doing, but he thought that perhaps it was trying to turn its back to him.
Boss Lu gave out a small chuckle before giving the system a small fake, frown. He didn't care for the listening ears and spoke out loud. "Dear System of mine, why is that the first thing you say to me? Shouldn't you be worrying if I'm hurt? I was in an accident after all"
The system gave out some angry aura as Boss Lu could feel something close to bloodlust. Boss Lu only gave out a laugh.
"Who cares. The sooner you're taken care of, the sooner I can go to my next job."
An expected answer. If Boss Lu wanted to be overdramatic he would have forced himself to cry.
"System, have I said how sorry I am? Don't hate me, please. I don't think I would be able to handle it..."
The large ball of fat seemed to tremble at his words and an angry burst out, "Lies! How shameless can you be to say such things with that ugly smile on your face?!"
"System thinks I'm ugly? How can that be? Wasn't it just a couple of days ago that the system was fawning over my beautiful looks and asking for marriage? Although I said I would think about it back then, I have decided to agree to your proposal. We will get married at dusk."
Boss Lu could have sworn he could hear the system's nonexistent blood vessels pop. "Shut up, you piece of poo! What marriage? Who would want to marry a piece of shit like you! And why are you talking like that?"
The sound of the door click stopped Boss Lu from responding as he looked over. "Hello. I am Investigator Yi. I am going to ask you a couple of questions. Do you understand?"
"Yes, Sir." It seems like it was time for questioning. Boss Lu looked towards the quiet system and gave it a small smirk. This system had the privilege to watch the dangerous rouge protagonist get his crime exaggerated to the point of a death penalty.
Investigator Yi sat down in the chair across from him and gave him a look before pulling out a large file and plopping it onto the metal table.
"Name is Lu Jiang; height is 178.3 cm; weight is 168 lbs and birthday is January 17th. This is you, correct?
"The one and only." That was unnecessary. Speaking with such an attitude would only make things worse for him. This is, is they could do something bad with him in the first place.
And like he thought, Investigator Yi narrowed his eyes and looked at Boss Lu with the same look that the man from the hospital did before. They were sharp and jagged. But Boss Lu thought that Investigator Yi's glare just couldn't match up with Bai Mo's.
Boss Lu studied the man's face. Tall, straight nose. Long strong eyebrows. And eyes that could cut through bone. His looks were nice, he just had been a heartthrob as a child. So squishy and cute. It's just that right on the side of the left of his cheekbone, there was a deep pink scar. It looked a couple of years old, and yet it was still healing.
The investigator pulled out a couple of photos from his folder and laid them across the table facing Boss Lu. "Do you recognize this man?" he asked.
Of course, he recognized him. The man in the photos were photos of Mr. Sung. The missing head of the Sung household. The pictures varied from different angles and dates. From work photos to pictures with families. But then towards the end of the lineup, were pictures of his corpse.
Boss Lu didn't flinch at the sight of it, nor did he cower. The image of Mr. Sung's mutilated body, where arms and legs bent in awkward angles and eyes were wide open. The blood drained from both the stab wounds in his torso and the spit pooling out of his open mouth. Any other person would have quickly tried to move their eyesight away from the gruesome image.
Yet Boss Lu just studied the image closely and looked back up to the investigator with a sweet, closed eye smile.
"Of course I recognize him. He's supposed to be the man I killed, right?"
