New beginnings

My grandma's house in Pennsylvania had always been my favorite place to visit during my childhood.

But walking in here now just made me feel like I'd hit rock bottom.

There's nothing wrong with the house itself, no... My grandma's house was huge and elegant, she'd always loved being flamboyant, though as big as the house is she only has one help, a Spanish old lady I call abuela, It's just the feeling that followed me in as I stepped through the glass doors onto the marble floor, it was a chilling feeling that sent shivers down my spine.

I shook it off and made my way up her huge spiral stairs into the room I always sleep in whenever I come here. I noticed the entire room had been redone to match my favorite color, purple. I smiled at her effort to make me feel more comfortable here.

On our way here, my grandma told me I could start school whenever I like , but as I remembered my mom's surprise in her old locker I wanted to start as soon as possible so my grandma agreed to let me start the following week.

I fell down on the soft mattress and let myself get taken away by sleep.

I woke up sweating and kicking. I just had a nightmare where I couldn't stop my mom from leaving.

I got up and noticed it was already night. The time on my phone says 8:17pm. I stepped into the large ensuite bathroom complete with a Jacuzzi and splashed some water on my face.

I looked up and caught a glimpse of myself. The girl staring back at me in that mirror is not the strong and independent witch my mother raised. This girl looks broken. This girl seems defeated. This girl is definitely not me.

Just staring at my reflection made me angry. I couldn't stop myself from muttering a spell that shattered the mirror into a million tiny pieces.

I smiled, satisfied with myself for getting rid of that broken girl in the mirror.

I skipped downstairs into the kitchen where abuela was doing the dishes. I sat on the island and grabbed an apple.

"Ayi chickito are you okay? I heard a noise coming from the upstairs" though she'd been living in the US for more than 25 years she still had a thick Spanish accent and her English still isn't fluent.

I smiled at her child hood nickname for me "yes abuela I'm fine"

Thankfully she didn't push it any further. She knew about our family and the fact that we are all witches but she just continued with the dishes.

By the time I got back to my room my grandma had already gotten someone to fix the bathroom mirror and it looked like nothing had happened.

I guess that's how it is when you're rich and powerful.

The entire week flew by in a daze and soon it was Monday and I had to resume at school.

I expected to be woken up by the annoying sound of my alarm clock which I loved to hate but was instead woken up by a soft nudge from abuela.

"Ayi chickito if you keep sleeping you are going to be late"

I opened my eyes and slowly everything started coming back to me till I realized I'd have to go to school today.

"Breakfast is downstairs and madame Lilith is waiting" I cringed a little before managing a nod.

After abuela left I made my way to the bathroom and did my business. I stood in front of the mirror again and smiled before replacing it with a scowl.

The girl in the mirror looked much better that the broken girl who I had seen only a few days ago.

At least I didn't look miserable anymore. My mother taught me to be strong and that's exactly what I'll do. I'll be strong for her.

When I came out of the bathroom I noticed that my clothes had been unpacked and arranged neatly in my closet. Abuela must have done this while I was asleep.

I was about to pick out an outfit when I noticed a uniform laying on the bed. I scowled at this, I had almost forgotten about the whole uniform situation.

The uniform was nothing impressive. Just a short plaid skirt and a sweater vest with the a crest that said silverrell schools.

Abuela had also laid a plain white shirt next to the pile which I was expected to where under the vest.

I sighed as I got dressed.

I straigthened my messy red hair and put on a pair of socks and my new Adidas shoes before heading downstairs.

I sat at the huge mahogany dining table big enough to host a banquet and waited for abuela to bring me my food. My grandmother was no where to be found though abuela said she was waiting.

"Abuela hurry up I'm gonna be late"

"You wouldn't have been late if you'd gotten up on time" she scolded and I scowled at this.

I checked the time and school starts in forty five minutes so I just couldn't wait for her.

I decided to use a basic cooking spell I learnt from my mum. I murmured the foreign words and almost immediately a steaming bowl of pasta appeared in front of me.

Pasta isn't my first option for breakfast but right now anything goes. I started wolfing down the food but half way through abuela made an appearance holding a plate of meat loaf.

I tried to give her an innocent smile but instead she said "now don't you do that with me", she wagged her finger at me, "do not waste food. You eat it now or I'll pack it up for you as lunch"

I just nodded and said "lunch" not wanting to incur her wrath. She Went back into the kitchen to pack the food up for me while I finished up my pasta.

I stood up and grabbed the brown paper bag abuela packed my food in and started making my way to the car when I heard my grandma shout "vixen come here" her voice was coming from her study so I made my way there.

She had on her reading glasses while she read a book titled 'Witchcraft in the 1800's.

"Good morning grandma" I gave her a peck on her cheek.

"Good morning my dear, you look great in that uniform"

"Thank you"

"Now as you know silverrell is not like your old school, there you'll meet witches and warlocks from all areas of life so I want you to be on your best behavior" she said in a Stern but loving voice.

"Don't worry grandma I won't cause any trouble"

"Good, the driver is waiting outside he'll drop you off and pick you up when you're done"

"Okay grandma goodbye love you" I said turning to leave.

"Love you too"

I quickly made my way to the black Mercedes outside and greeted Mason the driver before getting in.

The drive to the school lasted about fifteen minutes and honestly I was very nervous.

"We're here" Mason announced . I looked out the window and the building in front of me looked magnificent. It stood tall in front of a wide manicured lawn with floor to ceiling glass which had the school logo engraved on it.

It looked like something out of a magazine. I was pretty much gaping at the magnificent sight in front of me. I scrambled out of the car and checked the map which was conveniently located outside the building and made my way to the principal's office.

The inside of the building was just as beautiful and it seemed someone spent quite a long time designing it from scratch. I earned a few stares and whispers as I walked by but I just kept walking towards the principal's office.

Madam Rebecca the principal is a bright African American woman whose smile radiated of every inch of her face.

She must have been in her early fifties judging by the light wrinkles and grey hair peeking from her roots.

"Miss everdeen welcome to silverrell academy" she shook my hand firmly "okay so let's get down to business... You will be having a private orientation with me since you enrolled late"

"First rule of business, the school consists of humans, witches, warlocks and wizards. But the humans are not allowed to know about the existence of supernaturals so we have to be very careful here because we don't particularly like having to wipe the memories of the mundanes every week due to reckless behavior"

"You'll have basic classes such as math, algebra, PE and others with the mundanes but whenever they have classes like chemistry and biology you'll have classes like alchemy, potion Making or spell casting"

She stopped to confirm I was still following so I nodded to show I was and she smiled brightly at me again "okay then, get your schedule from the secretary upfront and I'll assign a fellow witch to show you around during lunch"

I shook her hand again and said politely "thank you ma'am"

"Please everyone just calls me madam Rebecca" I smiled politely and nodded as I made my way to the door she called out to me and said "I think I forgot to mention that if by chance one of the mundanes find out about your powers you Will be expelled"

I shuddered at the thought of having to leave this school But nodded and scampered out.

I checked the schedule I just got from a nice lady at the front desk and made my way towards my first class which happened to be English.

Thankfully the woman also gave me a map which means I didn't have to look stupid by asking for directions.

I made my way to the top floor to a class labelled 30A.

The moment I walked in I regretted it, the door slammed behind me which earned me looks from everyone in the class.

I was so embarrassed and begrudgingly urged my feet to move forward.

The teacher a stout man with a goatee addressed me "ah, you must be our new student"

I nodded meekly avoiding his eyes .

"Would you mind introducing yourself"

"Hello everyone, my name's vixen everdeen" I said loud enough for everyone to hear.

"Vixen, what a weird name" came a voice from the back of the class. Though he said it quietly it was heard clearly in the awkward silence of the class.

The teacher gave the boy a warning look but he just scoffed. "Miss everdeen is there any relationship to the great Lilith everdeen and Ariel everdeen"

"Lilith is my grandma and Ariel is my mom"

"Oh then I'm sorry for your loss" I just nodded "take the seat at the back next to Tristan"

I looked at the seat he was talking about and it just so happened to be the seat next to the rude asshole from earlier.

Just great.

I plopped down next to him and dug out my new English text book while trying to focus on the lecture.

All of a sudden I heard the assholes voice in my head saying 'hey newbie'

I jumped out of my seat out of fear and earned confused looks from people around me. I quickly dusted myself off and sat back down.

"What the fuck asshole get out of my head" I whisper yelled at him.

He chuckled at this "ah so you are a witch"

"So?"

"Oh nothing, I'm tristan by the way"

"And I'm trying to concentrate"

He laughed at this before saying "I like you"

I just scoffed at this and kept trying to ignore him.

Eventually he stopped staring at me and I found myself staring at him.

He had ocean blue eyes and messy brown hair which spilled out of his black beanie. I noticed he has a habit of biting his pen which I unexpectedly found cute. His eyebrows were furrowed probably trying to understand whatever the teacher was saying.

He must be a really good warlocks if he's mastered telepathy. I sighed which got his attention and he glanced at me and caught me staring.

I quickly averted my eyes while blushing furiously. I heard him chuckle and I could feel his eyes on me so I made sure not to look at him till the end of the class.
